Hi, it is possible to control the volume levels of the GUS using commmand line parameters?
The mixer.exe utility is quite ugly and annoying 😀

This depends on the GUS that you have, the original GUS had no mixer at hardware level.

You want ULTRAMIX.EXE, it uses an configuration file called (funnily enough) ULTRAMIX.INI. You can set all the parameters in that file (or simply pass them as command line arguments) and call ultramix.exe in your autoexec.bat just after ULTRINIT.EXE sets up the hardware.

The GUS PnP software package doesn't come with a DOS mixer (as the card was already targeted for Windows, like the AWE32).
Either you download the Mixer from the Reveal Wave Extreme32 which is a compatible Interwave card or you use MegaEm.
Thats what the FAQ says: http://www.cwu.edu/~melikd/guspfaq.html
I use an external mixer myself, so this wasn't an issue for me.

I have no experience of the pnp versions - but it will work on the GUS Max, as that is what I use.

Couldn't locate the DOS Reveal WaveExtreme drivers, only Win95 🙁

Apologies for the necrobump, but the original question is mine exactly. Is there no way to adjust the volume on the GUS Classic from DOS? I want to include it in my wavetable sample thread, but the output is LOUD, and clipping begins almost immediately. I don't have a hardware mixer. ULTRAMIX doesn't seem to have any effect, as elianda suggested above, no matter what settings I include in ULTRAMIX.INI. I also have a GUS ACE. Would ULTRAMIX work with it?

I can`t help but hardware was different between GUS cards:

GUS Classic before 3.7x revision and GUS ACE
no mixex chip

GUS Classic 3.7, 3.73, 3.74 and most of or all GUS clones with GF1 chip:
ICS2101 mixer chip
(v 3.7 with swaped channels error?)

GUS MAX:
CS4231 codec, no ICS2101

GUS Extreme and Synergy ViperMax
ES1688, no CS4231 nor ICS2101

Thank you, this helps a lot. I installed my GUS ACE, and when you try to run ULTRAMIX, you get a message saying that the ACE has no mixer capability. My GUS classic reports the changes as it if were working, but the volume is always the same.

Thankfully, the volume from the ACE is at normal levels, so I'm able to make a good recording.

Beauty card. But still without mixerchip. It was added to the 3.7x revisions.
If you check photo it is small ICS2101 chip in middle of the card:
https://retrosoundcards.wordpress.com/tag/gra … assic-ver-3-73/

And both Sound M16B and M16C clones used ICS2101. M16B same small package and M16C bigger package.

Maybe is problem in ULTRAMIX. I if program cannot detect difference between 3.4 and 3.7 revision. If expecting mixerchip and use not connected ports, volume isnt changed.
