This what I understand from what hard1k said and gus pnp pro card config:
Gus pnp pro can only handle 8mb because 2 banks are reserve for 512kb for Gf1 compatibility and the other 2 control the rest.
Am I correct?
But If you make total use of 16mb it will use all 4 banks. So there is no need for soj. GUS will only adress up to A19. I don't think there is the need for jumpers, since it has the adress limitation.
Is this correct?

First, you're almost right about the GUS PnP Pro. The 4 BKSEL lines are distributed in the following way:
0 and 1 go to SOJ if it's enabled by JP8, otherwise they go to SIMM 1 and 2,
2 and 3 to SIMM 1 and 2 if the SOJ is enabled by JP8, otherwise they go nowhere (or to SIMM 3 and 4 in case of a modded GUS with additional 2 SIMMs on the back for up to 16Mb support).
Second, you're right about no need for a SOJ - if we put a SIMM72 socket on the board, it will occupy all 4 banks, and additional bank switching between an onboard SOJ and a half of the installed SIMM doesn't sound reasonable.
As far as the address limitations are concerned, InterWave doesn't make any difference for installed RAM, it doesn't even know its physical package - whether it's a SOJ, SIMM or anything else. It treats all 4 banks equally, making the first 1Mb available for software seeking for an original GF1, and making all installed RAM (including the first 1Mb) available for any software (including its Win9x driver itself) looking for an InterWave in its native mode.
Thus no distinction for installed RAM shall be made despite its size and physical implementation - the chip will see and use it as I described above.
But as there is a possibility for some incompatibility with 16Mb, jumpers might be useful for a user to limit the installed RAM without having to replace the SIMM.

I've tried just a couple of your links.

The second gives me a shipping to RU for 57.47 GBP.
...
The last (a Russian one!) asks for a minimal $300 order.

Compaq card is a great one (despite some compatibility issues that have been reported about). But it is not that easy to hunt one down for an affordable price. And it isn't an ultimate GUS clone to that extent what I'm dreaming of.

Well written. And even if it won't become the ultimate GUS, it might still be a worthwhile project for those who like to solder, get a better understanding of hardware, maybe design a FPGA based card in the future, etc. Even if all that fails ... still were a few hours spent with something I enjoy 😀

Also thanks for clearing up all the RAM/Bank selection related questions ... saves me digging through the datasheets and manuals to a decent degree.

Okay awgamer, project cancelled 😁

I'll have to make do with my v2.4 GUS with a superfluous 1MB on board, 512k ought to be enough for anybody:) Actually it's my second, free from a place I worked, my first I bought when they first came out.

What does it look like in original GUS red?

I knew about the compaq cards for years, way back when I knew a place selling them for $5 but never bought since I couldn't justify it to myself, biggest thing I'd wanted to play with an interwave is MAXSBOS, which other than using the max's DAC, its claim to fame is it's an enhanced SBOS that will use a full 1MB(there's that 1MB again..)

PCBs will most likely be blue tho, reserving red for original gravis cards ... other options would be black, white and yellow. Black and white usually do a great job hiding traces while yellow isn't exactly my taste was used on AzTech cards.

Looks great! 😎

Any further thoughts on the copyright/licensing issue with the ROM sound font for those who are unfortunate in not having a GUS in possession? 😢

Sounds good and reasonable to me ... the current state is probably off by a bit anyways, but yeah, usage common brackets will be realized.

That is really a stroke of genius. Unless a solid supply of sound card brackets is available, modeling the ports after readily available (and relatively worthless) donor cards is brilliant.

Another minor upgrade ... started to attach logic signals to the redrawn lines aka fixing up errors ... started out with 4000, changing the design rule check in Eagle allowed me to lower that number to 900.
Down to 220 errors now (Eagle considers the redrawn lines to overlap with pads/vias as long as no signals are attached).

Basically this means I can start redrawing the schematic quite soon.

Isnt it possible to make like the ACE version of the Ultrasound? So it would easier to disable the adlib part.

I guess that would make another legitimate feature.

I've created the Eagle library for the AM78C201KC, for personal use for now, as it's a messy 160pin slob with the signals aligned like the pinout.
Will upload it once I cleaned it up a bit.

EDIT: Added placeholder for the IW78C21M1 (haven't reversed the pinout yet) and made a custom symbol for the 512kb SOJ chip.

To utilize standard brackets I'll need these measurements. Would be cool if someone could help out (metric units if possible).
