Sorry for that late answer. Here it is. ESS-Solo1 DOS ready to go.

The ESS works up to I865GV very well. From I915 upwards the digisound does crash/freeze the machine. Adlib works just fine. A Covox still works on I915, but the ESS in Digisound anymore. My fastest machine therefore is a P4/2,26 with I865GV (Scenic C610 ThinClient).

Finally got the time to try it out on a P4C800-E Deluxe (875P/ICH5R). Still I can't get digitized sound working on games like Doom (starts, but with no sound effects) and Duke Nukem 3D (can't detect DMA). I had a look at the spesifications of the ESS ES1946 that's similar to the ES1938 and used PCISET to try out other TDMA modes listed in the ES1946 datasheets with various results. Best result I got with TDMA4 (bits 2:0 set to 111 at offset 51h) with DN3D running for several minutes with sound effects before the game crashed. 😵

Think I'll stick to the PC/PCI interface or VIA chipsets for the Solo-1.

I am awaiting my DSS adapter, so everything will be fine. I'll stick to my C610 (i865gv) with SOLO1,
because it's fantastic small, silent, excellent imagequality, do/me/win2k (nt4 drivers are possible too)
and I checked out dgvoodoo (because beside a v3-pci, no voodoo-card fit's in the case) and dgvoodoo
runs beautiful with POD. It runs better (with less problems) a real voodoo-card causes with that game.
(but I have to figure out, how I can use the cd-audio for the Pod-Gold rip. GOG-Version seems to use
no RedBook-Audio, but will perhaps not run due to WinXP recommendation).

Yes, not compatible with the Intel 915G chipset.

Aureal Vortex or YMF7x4 PCI might work.

Have you tried with less physical RAM yet, like 512MB?

Won't help in your case as your chipset/motherboard doesn't support DDMA or PC/PCI.

thanks worth a try. the question is which is the better at least for sound inside windows98

For Windows games go get an Aureal Vortex 2 (AU8830) as it supports A3D 2.0.

instead of buying a soundcard for a possible uncompatible mobo, i buy a p5b-e plus mobo that has the reserve irq for legacy option, for now. and posibly later i willl buy a better audio card.

No, think I did a little mix up there. So what motherboard and chipset do you use?

hopefully you will not use the dvi of the 6200 because it's blurry blurry blurry in plain dos.
Using the VGA the output is good but not centered (textmode/VGA-256/EGA-16).
Beside that it's a fantastic card. It can run the matrox-reef-demo and nearly all
ATI-Techdemos up to the 9800stuff.

@sparky4

That chipset doesn't support DDMA, so there is no help in modifying SETUPDS.EXE.

Have you tried a different PCI slot?

What are the exact settings you are using in the setupds.exe configuration utility?

Post pics if possible.
