For DOS gaming on a PCIe system I would choose a ESS Solo-1 soundcard on a VIA based motherboard. Using the Yamaha YMF7xx DSDMA TSR requires EMM386 loaded and sometimes the system looses access to the harddrive when quitting games so you got to restart the system.

intel G31 any good?

Is it essential to "reserve IRQ5" in the bios. (never tested this though)
Do you have tested qemm386 instead of emm386.
Is a YMH724 any better in terms of compatibility? I only own a YMH744.
I only use FSC computers and they have I815/845/865/915 chipsets as PCI/AGP boards.
I found out, that on I915 my SOLO1 does only work in FM, no digisounds anymore. Digisounds do lock the machine on I915.

In fact, I got less issues with my 744 (under windows 98) that I had with my 724 : Under windows 98, duke nukem 3D crashed the whole computer when I chose to enable the sfx. With the 744 it works flawlessly

I got a free zotac g31, and i will start testing this this weekend.

It has intel chipset and has bios setting to set the IRQ5 as reserved.(some chipsets-bios don´t give you that option)
The sad thing is that it only has 1 PCI-E and 1 PCI slot.

so videocard has to be PCI-E and yamaha on PCI

for win98 there should not be a problem, i have read about modified nvidia win98 drivers working with GF 6000 series.
what im concerned is pure DOS gaming with a PCI-E videocard

Seems like the onboard Realtek PCIe Ethernet got Windows 98SE drivers, keep us updated if you got it working. For RAM you shouldn't go above 512MB.

Should work just fine, but for best compatibility use VGA to connect your monitor.

My modern PC has a GA-B75M-D3H motherboard (so that's socket 1155) and has 2 PCI slots, I may try to install a YMF7x4 someday and check if it works under DOS.

That'd be awesome if it does ^^

Yes, it actually might work as the B75 chipset still got native PCI.

I will test this weekend the zotac g31 + Yamaha pci card
motherboard is running smoothly, i can even disable the soundchip in the bios and reserve IRQ5.
i still need to buy today the 512mb ddr2 stick, i only had a 2gb one.

and also need to read how the yamaha gets its drivers installed on DOS. I got the driver pack but never installed a yamaha

tested my P4-3ghz HT recently. Dos-Sound works nice. Adlib works everywhere, SB works mostly, some games need to be patched through "throttle"
some games need more "throtteling" as with 1,6 Ghz P4, but they do all work 😀, if they worked on p4-1,6 before. (Chipset is i865, ESS-Solo1-PCI)

Tried lower MAXEXT settings? Also try playing around with the YMFIRQ utility.

Which Yamaha chip do your sound card got?

beside that, I can tell you that my favorite pci-soundcard (ess-solo1) does not fully work in i915 anymore.
Adlib works though, but if sb-digisound comes into place, the machine simply freezes.
I do not get any error during bootup/driver-loading.

so I went back to i865gv. my machine is a C610 (see the photos). currently with a P4-3,0Ghz. I am planning to downgrade to 1,6A P4
and do some experiments with "dosidle" especially when it comes to use with "throttle" in order to get more speed-sensitive dosgames working.

You can even go down to 1,2GHz if you use a Pentium 4 M as it defaults to it's lowest multiplier when running on a desktop board. Good luck with your system, I haven't had much luck in running Solo-1 on ICH based Intel boards without PC/PCI myself. I still recommend VIA chipsets for use with ESS PCI cards.

I have a "ready to go zip" simply put the card in a pci-slot and extract the drivers to your dosdrive, it should work ootb.
Can I put a Pentium4Mobile in that machine? the board is FSC-D1644. Does not seem to be compatible with a mobile P4 ?

@Kamerat

Do you mine trying Dune 2? I could never make it work with a YMF724, so i'm wondering about a 744. Problem was that as soon as a PCM sound was played during intro the whole system would lock up.
