The preset editor works great, but I had to make sure to Reboot the unit for the preset to take effect.
It also saves the settings when cutting power, so the settings are flashed into the rom.
To disable effects for testing I had to enable Mix and set it to 0.

Overall the DB X2 sounds great, very recommended.

A fast workflow for playing with the settings is to leave all the windows open.

Change something in the preset > save > flash > reboot > listen to it > Change something in the preset > rinse and repeat.

Once the file names are set, it's really quick.

Preset Editor bug report:

* Reverb/Chorus On/Off don't do anything, I had to Enable Reverb/Chorus Mix and set it to 0 (default) to disable effects.
* When "General Output Amp" is enabled the master volume (dial) wheel is saved as 5.9db no matter what setting I adjust it too, when the preset is loaded it is always on 5.9db.
* When Default preset is loaded, the parameters do not change from the last settings unless the tick-box is ticked. What are the defaults ????
* Loading the Default preset after the attached Crazyrandom preset leaves some parameters enabled.
* There is no maximum to the Chrous Mix setting, while reverb mix maximum is 65000.... is it that fine?

Can you show the maximum and minimum range values when the mouse is on the value? Something like "0-127" or "0-65000".
When loading presets EVERYTHING including the non-used values should change and be saved in the preset.... again, what are the defaults?

Preset Editor bug report:

Thanks for the bug report, I fixed the bugs in the editor. While X2 hardware and firmware was tested very very extensively over a long time,
the editor (and uploader) pc software is a recent development which was still beta (I use it often, but didn't notice the bugs yet, sorry 😒 ).
I am committed to make 1.00 release asap, your testing is appreciated, and is very helpful.

Please find the preset editor version 0.92 in attachment, with the reported bugs fixed.
Let me know if it works fine for you, I will then upload a new software pack on my FTP.
For accurate defaults/ranges : good idea, I plan to implement this, but I need time to get/find all needed information and test.

James-F wrote:

Hi yes this should really work, I tested again.
please note : you need to check a setting to include it in the dxp file.
This may be not so intuitive at first, the way it works : the dxp file is a preset 'patch' : only checked changes are stored, and they are applied at bootup of X2.

to disable reverb : check reverb on/off and set it to reverb off --> this will ensure the reverb is turned off (default is on)
to disable chorus : check chorus on/off and set it to chorus off --> this will ensure the chorus is turned off (default is on)

okay, bug fixed ! thanks for reporting !

James-F wrote:

defaults are determined by X2 at bootup, as the presets are a patch system, when not checked == default = don't change = 'dream lib default'.
when a setting is checked it overrides this. will need to doublecheck all defaults and ranges, I'll try to do it this weekend
(for some library functions I need to ask dream to be sure (not always clear from documentation).

James-F wrote:

some are midi ctrl range values, range 0 -127
others are 16 bit unsigned values like reverb and chorus mix.
I changed chorus mix max to 65000 for now
I will check all ranges this weekend (need to doublecheck some with dream).

James-F wrote:

yes can do, when I have all correct ranges I will implement this as well.

James-F wrote:

Sorry, non checked values are currently NOT saved into the preset (as this is a patch system).
Once I have all defaults, I can set all to default and override the checked values with the values from DXP, that should give an accurate representation of the patch effect on X2.

That's good news for anyone who ordered one!

With your explanation with regard to the presets as a patch system, I now understand why there is a drop-down list of options behind the 'Swap Stereo' and 'Equalizer On/Off' checkboxes. Normally I would expect just a checkbox to turn a function on or off, but you have to activate the setting and then make the proper selection.
There is a cosmetic issue with the application: depending on the font size, you need to resize the window to fit all the controls, so maybe a better auto-size of the application window would be nice?

Yes I realize that, but it still doesn't work.
The only option that turns off the reverb/chorus is the MIX option set to 0.
Please try it yourself dreamblaster.

Thanks for the quick fixes.

Nope, the preset you provided sound the same as Default.

EDIT:
Found the problem.
When the DB X2 receives a GS Reset sysex it will reset the Reverb and Chorus On/Off settings to default, the MIDI player I use (FSMP) sends GS Reset before each song.
BUT, it will NOT reset the MIX setting after a GS Reset.
That means DOS games like Doom and Duke3D will also reset the Reverb settings because they send a Reset sysex.
So to keep the Effects off or adjust the mix between dry and wet, use the MIX setting because the Reverb/Chorus On/Off resets when a GM/GS/GM2 Reset sysex is received.

Looking forward to more info on being able to adjust reverb/chorus settings. I think that is something I may want to do at some point, as I'd gotten so used to the S1, that the X2 seems too wet sounding in certain games.

I take it I'd have to pull the X2 from my DOS PC, attach it to a modern PC via USB, adjust the setting through software you provide, then move it back to my DOS PC?

The more I learn, the more I realize how much I don't know.

Hi,
good find ! didn't take into account the GS Reset, some dream lib functions respond to that. (I use midibar player which does not send GS Reset)
yes in that case it is advised to use the mix setting instead !

Hi,

I have improved the preset editor (thanks James-F for testing and feedback !!).
A new X2 software pack 1.01 can be downloaded from http://serdaco.com/downloads/X2/X2_SoftwarePack/
This includes a new preset editor version, and new demo presets (which are not affected by GS reset).
Preset Editor 0.97 changes :
- Reported bugs fixed.
- Indication which parameters are reset by GS reset.
- new demo presets (immune to GS reset):
--- Default.DXP : dream' default wet setting. (good for solo instruments, but a bit overwhelming in game soundtracks like doom)
--- DoomTastic.DXP : sound goods with DOOM midi on my m-audio speakers.
--- NoEffect.DXP : chorus and reverb disabled using the mix settings (thanks James!)
--- Serdaco_LessIsMore.DXP : more balanced effects, 'less is more', (you may wish to tweak eq. according to your taste, I added some bass).
--- BoomBastic.DXP : Exaggerated bass heavy loud eq
