PCI SB Card

Postby McDos » 2016-12-20 @ 15:42

Hi

I've recently re-purposed my old Pentium 4 Dell 360 Precision as a dual boot W2K/DOS machine. I am now looking for a SB/SB compatible card that will work with DOS games as well as MIDI (I have a Roland MT-32). There is no ISA on the mobo so the card needs to be PCI. I believe I also need an MPU-401 compatible intelligent MIDI interface for some games, so recommendations on this would be helpful too.

Thanks

Regular MPU-401 UART interfaces are easy to come by. Not sure if any intelligent ones exist for PCI. However, since you are using a 386+ machine, you can use SoftMPU to get full intelligent MPU-401 support from any UART device.

Thanks for that. Can I set SoftMPU to run automatically during boot to DOS?

Yes, I suppose you can just add it to your autoexec.bat.

I would say that an Aureal Vortex2-based card + SoftMPU would be your best bet. I haven't tested that combination, however, so I'm not sure if the Vortex2's AU30DOS TSR will conflict with SoftMPU.

How about the SB0220? I've read that others have got it working with DOS games and they are readily available for little money.

IIRC, neither the game port nor MPU 401 is exposed by SB Live DOS emulation. An Aureal 2 card should work great. A Yamaha YMF-7x4 PCI card may be worth asking about as well due to the real OPL3 core.

Here's the list of games the require an intelligent-mode interface.

As you can see, they're all pretty old.

Here's the list of cards tested to work with SoftMPU. The PCI cards include Aureal Vortex, ESS and Yamaha YMF72x cards.
