C-Media 8738 is kind of low-end, like one step up from an onboard audio codec like Realtek. Should be fine for general purpose audio (if it's got reasonable circuit layout and isn't too noisy) but won't have anything special for gaming. Why are you considering it? Specifically for 6ch audio (which of course isn't a unique feature, though many of the older cards we use don't have it)? Or just to have something a little different than what most of us talk about?
It does appear to have 9x drivers from a quick Google search.
Yes, I always ramble this much.
I own this card and only reason I bought it was because it was cheap and has SPDIF-out which my Mainboard has not. I think this is the only reason to buy it, there is nothing special about it.
