I have a Yamaha YMF719-S and after installing all my drivers (video, sound, network in that order), Windows for Workgroups 3.11 would refuse to run. It would run fine if I did win /n but if I ran it regularly, I would get a "Not enough extended memory to run Windows." This was with QEMM and 635K conventional free and the rig has 64MB RAM so I thought something fishy's going on.

The Softhsynth driver for the card was causing the error. Go into SYSTEM.INI and remove the DEVICE=VSGM.386 line. Go to the Yamaha line and change the 0's to 1's for these

CPLMPUBoth=1
DelSoftSynth=1

Hope others find this helpful.

I saw the same thing (albeit with PC DOS 2000 and Microsoft EMM386 from Win3.1, but 627k conventional free and 64MB installed), and found a mention of it on Vogons, but no solution. Thanks for sleuthing this one out, it's a rather nettlesome problem.

I would think the softsynth driver wouldn't be all that helpful anyway if you want to use the OPL3, or if you want to use a MIDI daughtercard or external module.

Alas, I'm down to emulation.
