Which sound card is better for a 486 DOS PC? ES688FC, ES1898C PnP or YMF718-S PnP

Not that I found. There were some files labelled Midi mapper in the Windows 3.1 install files, but I never tried Windows 3.1 on that machine. ESSCONFIG for DOS only seems to have MPU-401 settings for later chips, but not the 688.

Appiah posted a driver package with the MPU TSR onboard a little while ago. HTH.

I tested the TSR with an ES688FC and can confirm it loads. I did not get to try the midi out though as the system had other issues with the DMA modes.
