Samples aside, by 1994, several of the larger sound libraries (Apogee Sound System, Asylum Sound System, HMI Sound Operating System, Miles Sound System, etc.) provided/supported 16-bit stereo mixing and playback routines.

Perhaps it's time to document the titles that include 16-bit samples and/or leverage the aforementioned 16-bit mixing/playback routines. The resulting list will likely be larger than most people realize.

I am guessing you could find a card with everything wanted except intelligent mode MPU-401.

Not including that, finding a perfect one-card solution for everything is pretty much going to be impossible though. There were never any made that would cover everything.

At the very minimum, you are going to need a 2-3 card solution.

1. Older Aztech card that supports Covox, Disney, etc. - only problem with this is that they are speed sensitive. If you have a system you can easily configure to slow down enough for really old games that you need to use it for, then sure.
2. Awe32 or Awe64 for games that specifically support those.
3. Maybe something like a Turtle Beach Tropez, or something else that supports Stereo SB-PRO, has OPL3, and has either wavetable header or has good onboard wavetable if you aren't going to use external modules.
4. GUS

I used MOD4WIN years ago. I think at that time I had a p1-75 or P1-200, but I can't remember that.
Today I never use MOD4WIN because I never had a full version of it, beside the fact, that I like the old winamp with mod-plugins/visulizers better.
At the moment I prefer screamtracker, which is a dos-programm and is very good in my eyes.

Btw. I never use WSS which the audician32 has, I simply don't seem to need it and beside that I don't know how to install WSS in Win9x.

I really think that SBpro is much more important than sb16, because there are LOTS of SBpro kompatible games, that a sb16 can only
play as mono beside stereo of the original.

What games do you know that in fact use the SB Pro in stereo and lack separate support for the SB16?

It all comes down to SBPro doesn't crackle/pop with single-cycle DMA games, supports SBPro interleaved stereo, and always has original OPL3, BUT lacks MPU-401.
The SB16 on the other hand is huge mess with tons of bugs spreading across all revision, and if you do find the 'less messy' ones like ct2230/2290 they are only good for non single-cycle DMA (auto-initialize DMA) games.
Personally for pure DOS system I would go for a SBPro2 + MPU-401 card, or find a all-in-one card like Audician 32, Aztech AZT2316 cards.
A SBPro2 + SB16 (or other with MPU-401) is also a great solution but requires some effort and knowledge to set up properly

Quite the opposite, there's almost no stereo games that support only the SBPro for stereo but not the SB16.
But if a game supports the SB16, it most surely supports the SBPro stereo too.

Besides lists of box specs, you've found that these games use the stereo mode unique to SB Pro?

Did you find any problems with the CS4232 controller and codec? I use one for it's MPU-401 interface, but generally don't use it's SB Pro compatibility as my card has the Crystal FM clone (which I hate). The line in and mixer seems magnificently noise free. Were I to have an Acer S23 or TB CS4232 card I might investigate it further.

Have you tried a CS4237 based Crystal card? They have all the awesome of the 4232 cards and a nicer OPL3 clone - there is still some difference to the real thing, but not in an offensive way. I use my Acer S23 because I can, but if it died then I'd be quite happy to replace it with 4237.

No, not a CS4237. My card has a combination CS OPL clone and 3D effects chip. It sounds so bad, I'm kind of afraid of all the Crystal Semi OPL clones.

Aztech made a few cards with the Crystal CS4231 for 16-bit WSS playback/recording, SB Pro emulation, and included a real OPL3 chip. They also supported UART MPU-401 from the game port and sometimes even had a waveblaster header. ESS cards are a close second due to the ESFM emulation not being 100% OPL3 sounding, but they do feature more operators then the Yamaha chips do.
