Hi,
I tested TEMU and CVX4, to play games with Tandy / PCJr sound, and this works :
using TEMU 3.03 : just start TEMU /L1 /T44
(for LPT port 1 and 44Khz rate (this is what I tried, maybe less will sound better?))

You can see me setup this and test Tandy 1000TL sound in Thexder 2 : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IWZwYyIjkZU
Also in codename iceman, using TEMU for PCJr/Tandy 1000 : https://youtu.be/p7xgG5wzlaU
Basically it seems to work in any game where you can choose tandy sound independently of tandy graphics mode (see photo) :

But there's also a COVOX driver for EGA and VGA sierra games : just copy DIGITAL.CFG and DIGITAL.DRV to your game directory.
Then you can select COVOX sound in the sierra installer --> https://youtu.be/jT20jJE-iJg
The sound is lo-fi (especially compared to mod files or this CVX4 sample playback : https://youtu.be/meQ2L5S5ULU), but it works 😀

Then I also tested disney sound source playback, for sound effect. I loaded TEMU first, which seems to help DSS detection in games.
So with TEMU loaded, this works on Wolfenstein 3D https://youtu.be/A5PdhbNMTH4

The covox tools/drivers could be found here : http://nostalgy.net.ru/drivers.shtm
There's also a virtual soundblaster driver, but this only supports sample playback, not FM music.

I attached the drivers I used for these tests.

I tested some games with VirtualSB and found that Wolf3D, Prehistorik 2 and Electrobody work just fine with it.
VSB should really be consider as a hidden bonus though IMHO, lack of FM is annoying and some games don't like the way it taps into the system and either refuse to boot or might freeze after some time when playing samples.

TEMU does not work very good,
civilisation works ^

i plug this device beetween covox and lpt port to gain 100% DSS combatible Sound

file.php?id=21983&mode=view
file.php?id=21984&mode=view
The files are freely avaible so you can make our own DSS Adapter.
Even Shadow Warrior and Duke Nukem 3D Sound very good 😀

Keep in mind Wolf3d is quite a bad testcase, from what I gathered the detection routine is quite primitive and the playback routines still work when the timing on the DSS is severely off (sounds won't be priorized).
Better use Dungeon Master or Alone in the dark for testing.

Awesome thread! 😁 Thanks for it! And all the recordings, of course!

Hi, I used to use 22KHz. But 44KHz also seems to be fine. Just try to make sure the resistor values are close to what they should be.
Maybe also add a low-pass filter, if needed. Let's also keep in mind the author of TEMU had no access to a real Tandy machine, by the time he wrote it.
Maybe some of our developers here could help to check/improve the TEMU code for accuracy (please) ?

Ah, ok. But please tell me in which way (sound quality, authenticity or compatibility) ?
Personally, I noticed low audio quality, but with my quick&dirty Covox clone. 😅
On the commercial clone and my later clone, TEMU sounded nice, *similar* to DOSBox. 😀

Civilisation sounds nice on temu, can't hear much difference 😀
also Eye of Beholder worked ^^

But vsb made me crazy, random lookups, won't work on my 386SX laptop 😳

Oh, I see. Also had lots of problems with the SB emulators, so you aren't alone with this. 😅
For some reason, they did not always work for me. Perhaps I't was also my fault at some point, and I missed something. 😊

By the way, it would be cool if somone could add a simple AdLib emulation to VSB or the other SB emulators.
By simple, I mean a small OPL2 core with just the basic funtionality (mono, low sampling rate, perhaps not even supporting the auto-detect for games).
I would try to make that, if I wasn't such a lousy programmer. 😊

i had an idea for a different route, add a opl2 to the LPT port, and remap it via emm386 calls 😳

i already hookup a SID Chip to LPT 😀

Cool idea, but I think someone else was quicker! 😀

Hi everyone, first time poster here!

I have been lurking these forums for a couple months now, and been reading these threads about the CVX4 with great interest. Especially since I have a compaq contura laptop with no soundcard. I don't have a CVX4, but a retrocables covox clone. Been using it lately to test TEMU with various classic DOS games.

I have found that it works with Secret of Monkey Island if you run TEMU and then run Monkey Island with "monkey ts" at the command line to force tandy sound. Populous is one of the 3 games shown in the recent 8-Bit Guy video on the Covox (and Disney Sound Source) working with TEMU, like Monkey Island you need to run it with a special command to force tandy sound "populous cga tandy sound".

I have tested the Sierra covox sound drivers and found all the SCI engine EGA games that I have working with it. But the one VGA game, Space Quest 5, I have only managed to get tandy sound playing at the sierra logo and then complete silence. Seems like the VGA covox driver works a bit different 😐

I have also managed to make the AGI Sierra games work with TEMU. How? Well I used a different set of patches made by CarlosTex that are intended for homebrew Tandy sound cards. Here is a link to a readme file describing that project: ftp://ftp.oldskool.org/pub/TandySoundPatches/Info/README.txt
I tested Kings Quest 1+2+3, Space Quest 1+2, Police Quest 1 and Leisure Suit Larry 1. Larry and KQ2 crashes unfortunately, but the rest works with TEMU. KQ3 intro music sounds quite good I think, though I have never heard how these games are supposed to sound like on a real tandy.

Also should mention some other games I have found working with TEMU:
- Silpheed
- Zeliard (sounds quite good IMO)
- Might and Magic 3
- Castles 1
- Veil of Darkness (1993 RPG with cool Adlib music, unfortunately Tandy sound is not as good)
- Test Drive 3

And in case you did not see the 8-Bit Guy video:
- Ultima 6
- Tetris Classic

I hope this is useful information for someone out there!

Sorry guys, temu does not work for me.

My idea is to use the "temu" to get SFX in some Dosgames while my ESS-Solo1 PCI cards emulation SBpro is not working.
After starting temu every setup leeds to a failure and a freeze. Here is a screenshot of this.

Perhaps I need a real disney-sound-source or tandy-sound-sorce for my machine. I currently only have a covox on ltp1
that output is connected to the input of the ESS-Solo1. I would love to play some more games with sfx.

Greetings
Doc

btw. I tried the special covox-driver "digital.cfg" on some EGA sierra adventures. It works and it's better then PC-Speake for sure,
but "adlib" works fine on ess-solo1, choosing soundblaster always leads to "unable to initialze sound hardware".

I guess temu doesn't work well along with some DOS Protected-Mode extenders or programs using them.
But VSB should be kinda comaptible with them. If you have a copy of QEMM, try QEMM 7 or higher. Maybe it works.
https://github.com/volkertb/temu-vsb

Edit: You could also try to replace DOS4GW with DOS/32A. Not sure, if it cures your problems, though..

I only use Himem! The newer Games like Duke/Rott interpret the started temu like a sort of "qemm", but it's not,
or they have internal usage of the dos-extenders temu does not like.

Therefore none of the games that do not work with ess-solo, work with covox and temu.
The only way to check DSS or TSS is using the hardware. So does someone have a covox with a DSS addon?

Thx

Checked out my collection and my tandy 1000RL/HD seems obsolete with the "temu" 😀
Lot's of games do work with "temo /L1" and "sierra -t". The patched "zak" and "maniac" do work too, but "shift-m" for mouse and "shift-w" for wrting perfs are ignored by restart, not a big deal perhaps my german version is the fault. Temu works with lots of old games. The Covox-Disgital driver for Sierra EGA/VGA Games is also nice. Would be a bit better if speech is supported.

Made some further tests:

Larry1 has serious graphical issues with temu. Is there a version that works?
My KQ3 Version does not seem to allow tand< sound via "-t", I only hear PC-Speaker.

Rest seens fine to me. Great program!

We should make a compatibility-list for this!

Seconded.
I am a proud owner of two CVX4s and I am very satisfied with the quality.

I especially liked how - in conjunction with TEMU - the Tandy emulation works nicely with some games, as well as the VSB.

Civilization I is a nice example of where the TEMU just plainly works.

I have also found a variety of SB games where the SB emulation works flawlessly. And ofc, the 21st Centruy Pinball Tables (Dreams, Dreams2, Fantasies, Illusions and Mania) are prime examples of full compatibility.

But there is more!
