I am using an Audician 32 Plus in MS-DOS 6.22 with Windows 3.11. I loaded the drivers in W3.11 which also installed the DOS drivers and that went through fine. When I go play a game with voice audio like Privateer every now and then there is a screeching sound that obscures the voice. Any idea what could be causing this?

Is it just Privateer that this happens in? Or other games? Double-check your IRQ and DMA settings that the game settings match the settings in SETUPSA. Mute the items you aren't using (line in, WSS, MIC, etc). Can you tell if the screeching is digital or FM? You can mute each individually to rule out if you're not sure. Also, did you set the two jumpers on the card for line out, and NOT speaker out?

The more I learn, the more I realize how much I don't know.

How much memory does it have? Privateer must to run with 16MB or less

So far everything checks out with the sound card but I think this may be it as the system in question has 64MB. I did not know that any of the DOS games would have an issue with the memory size as I figured it would just ignore anything it was not using but if this statement is accurate then this is likely why the game is experiencing these glitches.

There are a few games that can't handle above 16 or 32 MB, Pivateer is well known for this issue, I use XMSDSK to create a ram drive to use up the extra memory.

That's a great idea. Thanks!

Well XMSDSK did indeed reduce the memory down to whatever I wanted but in using that it killed all speech ability on the card. Music is fine but no speech at all when XMSDSK is running. Not sure why that happened but I think I am going to remove the Audician and try one of my other sound cards and see what kind of luck I have with that.

Did you use the /t qualifier? That removes memory from the top rather then the bottom. I pretty sure this was required when I tried it.

No I didn't but I will certainly try. Hopefully that will get it working.

That was it! Once I reduced all that available extra memory and used the /t option everything worked perfectly. Thanks! 😁
