I just purchased (but have not received yet) a SC-55 (firmware 1.10). Shortly after buying it I read from an unverified source that some of the early SC-55 units were not completely MIDI compliant. They said that early units were only labeled "GS Standard" on the front where the later ones said that and "general MIDI" as well and it is these later ones that are 100% MIDI compliant. From the pictures I saw mine just says "GS Standard" on the front. Do I have anything to worry about when attempting to use the one I purchased to play games that support general MIDI?

Differences are very minor.
Maybe you'll hear a key click instead of breath noise if a particular game uses that sound.
Don't worry about it. Nearly all sounds are the same.

You can read more about the differences here:

Thanks for the info. I got paranoid earlier before I read your comments and just went ahead and got another SC-55 that is firmware 1.21 as this one seems to be the perfect one to get from the reading that I have done. I guess I will just sell the other one to someone. 🤣
