I have a Gigabyte GA-6IEML motherboard with a Pentium 3 1.4GHz on it. In this I've put an Audigy 1. The sound card works perfectly.

The problem:
Regardless of which of the 3 PCI slots I put the card in, and no matter if the drivers are actually installed or not, Windows 98 will shut down incorrectly, making ScanDisk appear on boot. It stops all programs, goes to a black screen, then turns off after about 2 seconds. It all looks the same as if the card isn't there.

What I've tried:
Several different drivers
All the PCI slots
Manually assigning IRQ's in the BIOS
Automatically assigning IRQ's
Removing the card several times to make sure the problem goes away

What I don't want to do:
Disable ScanDisk, like every non-vogon forum post about similar problems seems to suggest

Any recommendations?

Win98 struggles to shut down best of times.
I have Audigy 2 and find not applying any updates I can shutdown fine.
If I apply the various shutdown fixes or unofficial service packs Shutdown no longer powers off the system.
Others report needing to apply the fix or unofficial service pack to shutdown.
Try different combinations and see what works for your system
