I don't know if you guys would be tickled by this but I thought it would be cool to make some instrument preamps (sound modelers) from some of the better vintage sound cards. The linux community has several very good open source sound modeling programs that can use a real APU. I suspect the only issue is getting driver/bus support. Am I wrong to think some of these very quiet vintage Celeron boxes couldn't be repurposed into very nice instrument preamps?

Cool idea, but would it work? If I'm reading what you're saying right, you want to take low level signals in using a sound card (mic in??), boost it digitally using a model and output it at line-level, right? I'm not sure your average sound card ADC would be accurate enough with the low-level signals you want to use, the noise floor is pretty high until you start getting into "proper" recording gear.
