Hi guys. I am having issues installing my CT4520 AWE64 sound card on Windows 98. First, when using the AWE64 install disk I got the error shown below:

I then tried to open the AWE Control that was installed with the software and got this error:

As you can see there is also the unidentified Creative device. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Picture of the card and motherboard below:

Well that certainly is an issue. Granted, it still has something that won't install correctly. Going to order up an actual AWE64 in the meantime. Any ideas? It seems like music files are the only thing that aren't working. Sound effects appear to be working properly.

This is AWE 64 you can see it on the chipset as well.
BTW im hunting AWE 64 gold since years, and i ended up with x2 AWE 64 value rofl...

Well then find the proper model, or the driver is not the proper, as creative did have tons of problems back then.
Look with some program like AIDA 64 for the right model of the card, as the stick can be wrong, or try the chip.

Yeah as i did say the label/sticker seems wrong, so try to look for that chipset on the google, and best way for you is to look with AIDA 64 software that will show you what is your card, then you will know and download the correct driver.

The illegal operation errors don't give much information to go on; could be a crappy Windows installation, crappy hardware or just the wrong drivers.

What drivers are you using? It should probably be as late an SB16 disc as possible, but the late ones seem to be pretty hard to find online.

Yeah, looks pretty good to me, but give Creative's basic driver update a go then.

Did you test it in plain DOS before? CT4520 known as a card which firmware has become bad in some rare situations and need reflash. In that case CTCM says something like "corrupted checksum" or so.

Well if this thing makes you so much problems and trouble just sell the damn thing, and buy AWE 64, that is what i will do, after all this card is nothing special. I will understand if the card was AWE 64 Gold then yes it worth it to spend time and nerves on it as the card is great, but on that low class not worth it...

I just purchased an actual AWE64, but I would like to get this card working in case I ever build something slower and need a spare card. I'll try the firmware flash as well. Thanks aleksej.

I don't see how the fake CT4520 would even take the AWE64 firmware. It isn't an AWE64. Or is that flash specifically for the fake CT4520?

So an update here. I found the correct driver for this thing! It is located here: https://www.driverguide.com/driver/detail.php?driverid=44493. This will get the card working correctly. And apparently it does still show up as an AWE64, just a cut down version. Thanks for all of your help guys. It's been greatly appreciated!

Thanks for following up. I had a heck of a time with my Sound Blaster and getting it to work with DOS.
