I can get hold of a Fortemedia FM801 sound card for quite a good price, but can't find a whole lot of information about this card regarding DOS compatibility.

Would this be a worthwhile PCI card for DOS games? What is the FM Synthesis like?

Any insights on this particular card would be much appreciated.

Thanks. 😀

Pros:
Good motherboard chipset compatibility, works on Intel chipsets up to i875.
Real FM synth.
SPDIF out that works under DOS.
No need for a TSR (one is provided for IRQ emulation but not needed if youre able to set the right PCI IRQ).

Cons:
FM synth not the most accurate when compared to real OPL3.
Game compatibility, samples in some games played at wrong speed.
Stability issues when using the MPU401 interface in Duke Nukem 3D (and perhaps other games that uses the same engine?).
