Has anyone gotten this to work, official from Roland? It apparently patches your MT-32 to make it work better for GM playback.

I've tried several methods of loading "MTGM.mid" to my MT-32rev0 but none of the midi music seems to sound any different (ex. doom).

I've tried MDF, MidiEX, dump, dosmid, and I do see the green led flashing on the mt-32. I also tried softmpu.exe with /SYSEXDELAY and that made a lot more green led flashing, but still no difference.

Did I miss something? I only loaded MTGM.MID as per the instructions

I've gotten a MTGM.MID to work by playing it with PLAYMID.EXE in DOSBox. (Here's a video of Trilby's Notes.)

You can also use FSMP for this. You do not even have to use MTGM.MID since the SysEx messages are extracted to MT32_GM_Mode.syx and you can set it as a default reset SysEx. This way you no longer have to worry about other MT-32 midi files overwrite the GM state by sending other SysEx messages. You can set it as a custom SysEx by right clicking the 'First Aid' like reset button -> Select/Send Custom SysEx -> MT32_GM_Mode.syx. Pressing the reset button sends the messages immediately but the messages are also sent before playback. An alternative way is that you copy the MT32_GM_Mode.syx file to the folder where your GM midi files are and rename it to 'Folder.syx'. Folder.syx file is loaded before playback for all files in the folder.

You can elso test with FSMP more easily. You can check if loading MTGM.MID/MT32_GM_Mode.syx worked by pressing notes on the virtual piano of FSMP on Channel 1. Channel 1 by default is not assigned to any parts on MT-32 (only channels 2-10). But if loading is OK the new GM compatible channel layout 1-8,10 is set by the SysEx messages so you should hear Acoustic Piano 1 on channel 1.

I appreciate your detailed answers, thank you!!

playmid.exe worked great, and I didn't need softmpu's help of /SYSEXDELAY

Falcosoft, FSMP looks amazinggggg++. When I finish setting up Win98 I'll certainly be playing with this. I do see your sysex files... and actually grabbed them to try.

I tested load times using DUMP.EXE:
Using MT32.mid it took 25s
Using your MT32_GM_Mode.syx it took 11s

So it's much faster! And the MT-32 sounded proper if I used DUMP.EXE with the SYX file instead of the MID, so that's what i'll use in my mt2gm.bat script.

Thank you again!

Doom sounds surprisingly good with this patch set 😀
