Probably (ESS?) Transparent Direct Memory Access(T DMA), which should map an ISA DMA Controller to a PCI Controller, so you can use a PCI Card (or in this case Chip) like a ISA Card.

What's so bad about PCI? ISA had plenty of its own problems, wouldn't you say?

this is not about whether pci is this or that, it just does not work the intended way without additional driver support;

Funny thing is that it probably runs in DDMA mode with the chipset of your motherboard.

The ESS PCI chips doesn't require any drivers, just need to be initialized by setting the right PCI registers. There is a TSR for IRQ emulation which is handy if the PCI IRQ of the card is not 5 or 7.
