Is the MPU401 pretty much the same across all sb/sb16/sb32 cards? Are any of them easier to get working with midi modules and games?

I currently don't own enough hardmpu's to go across all my machines, and don't have any delusions about finding any other affordable mpu interfaces out in the wild.

I have no clue what I'm doing! If you want to watch me fumble through all my retro projects, you can watch here: https://www.youtube.com/user/MrDavejustdave

No.
Cards prior to the SB16 do not have an MPU401-compatible MIDI port at all (it uses a proprietary SB-MIDI interface, which is not widely supported in software).
SB16 and later cards have an MPU401-UART compatible MIDI port. However, some revisions have the 'hanging note' bug, others do not.
