I always remember Doom 3 at launch being very anti-climactic with its dull, flat sounds and effects that made provided a weakened contrast to what was supposed to be an ominous environment.

I watched an episode of LGR today where he compared Doom 3 with and without EAX 4.0 and the results are absolutely stunning! THIS is what the game really needed. I had no idea of the experience I was missing for all these years.

With the elimination of EAX on Windows since Vista, does anyone know if it's possible to get these kind of sound effects on modern Windows with or without Creative hardware? I've not tried the revised BFG edition. Does that improve the sound at all?

Creative developer proprietary ALChemy software to do exactly that - restore EAX functionality on Vista and later platforms.

It's only for Creative cards, but there is an unofficla "Universal" edition that, supposedly, works on non-Creative hardware as well:

AFAIK, DOOM3 BFG Edition does not use EAX, but relies on other techniques to achieve surround sound.

Patched Doom 3 use OpenAL. If you have any Creative card starting from original Audigy it will just work. Creative ALchemy is not required.

I must be some kind of standard: the anonymous gangbanger of the 21st century.
