Hi , i got stock dell gx1 with onboard Crystal CS4236B.
When i choose midi 330 with duke3d and doom there is no midi sound , and no error. When i choose 310 or 320 there is error and no sound.
I tried in dos this driver:
https://www.philscomputerlab.com/crystal-cx4235.html
also this driver
http://www.vogonsdrivers.com/getfile.php?fileid=925
and i tried without drivers.
Midi not working... When i choose sound blaster option there is sound but midi is far better imo...
I tried to disable all onboard lan , com ports etc...

Any ideas? Thanks for help.
Edit. In general there is sound , when i choose sound blaster option or adlib instead of midi ...
I tried add to autexec SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 H5 P330 E620 T6 and no different.

if you don't install a midi device then all you can use is fm synthesis

I think that in DOS a MIDI device needs to be actually connected to the MPU-401 output to have MIDI music. Otherwise it's working (hence, no error), but the MIDI output goes "nowhere" since there is no device at the other end...

From inside Windows 9x, it should work fine, as the drivers can route the MIDI output to the Windows software MIDI synthesizer.

In DOS, you need a hardware device (which you don't have by the sound of it).

In Windows, you can use the built-in Windows MIDI synthesizer (software).

Hardware. For DOS you need a real MIDI hardware device connected to your soundcard's MIDI output. E.g. some Roland SC-55, SC-88 or similar. Or one of dreamblaster's new devices:

This is not so much retro, as it is the way MIDI works. 😀 Except if your soundcard has an onboard MIDI module...
