I need to upgrade my sound blaster 16 CT4170 card as I can't get 16-Bit DMA working on it, and I was wondering if a CT4520 (AWE64 value) is better than a AWE32.

Checking the prices on eBay it's breaking the bank if I go with the AWE32 cards. So should I pay premium or just go with a CT4520?

AWE64 positives :
- No hanging note bug
- Usually cleaner output
AWE64 negatives :
- CQM instead of real OPL3 (some AWE32s have real OPL3, others have CQM too)
- RAM upgrade requires SIMMCONN adapter (AWE32s just need SIMMs). Under DOS, the extra RAM mostly goes unused (can only load SBK soundbanks, not the more common SF2).

If you want the ability to upgrade the RAM with SIMMs, then go for an AWE32 or SB32.

SB32 models are CT3600 and CT3620 - These usually go for a lot less than the AWE32 cards. They may/may not have the standard 512KB onboard RAM but they do have the 2 SIMM slots for easy upgrading.

There is a CT3930 (AWE32 with Vibra and OPL3) on eBay right now for $49.98 shipped (not mine):
