Two follow-up questions, then:
1) In the Windows 10 sound manager it's stuck at 16bit/48kHz and cannot be changed (i.e. selection is greyed out). Can this be ignored or is something wrong there? Maybe a firmware update could help here, should be possible through the upload manager. My firmware version is 1.01.
2) Would the AK4388 be enough to properly drive high impedance headphones like the beyerdynamic DT990 Edition (250 Ohm)? If I'm not mistaken it's missing a dedicated headphone amplifier, but I dunno if that's even necessary.

1/ The X3M is running at 48Khz. It mixes and uses the DAC in 24 bit mode, but the standard windows audio driver stream is set for 16 bit stereo.
2/ it cannot drive headphones directly as it misses a headphone amp. the output is line out.

Well, that would have exceeded my expectations by far, anyway. This is a MIDI device primarily after all, the audio device function is a nice bonus.

It's still amazing it can work as a basic (but good) soundcard, anyway. While it may not quite satisfy audiophile needs, it's still a great option if you don't have any DAC available at all otherwise.

This is somewhat interesting. I have found a related soundfont I didn't expect. https://quasarsounds.com/listing/roland-sc880 … soundfonts-sf2/

Just a tiny remark - Amiga has been always MIDI capable. Only thing needed is serial to MIDI cable (similar to DB15 to MIDI). Difference is, nobody gives a damn about MIDI on Amiga...

GM soundfonts have there own space for orchestral instruments. There a couple of places to get them commercially, E-mu https://www.digitalsoundfactory.com/product/s … udio-orchestra/
and https://www.goldmidisf2.com/free-soundfonts/

This is not related to the Dreamblaster X2/X3 though.

Indeed! The Dreamblaster cards doesn't even support soundfonts in .sf2 format, right?

I was pointing out there is a historical soundfont that should give a similar quality sound.

Except, if I am understanding right, the dreamblaster soundbanks are not at all similar to how SF2s are packaged..

There is a Dreamblaster X2GS that appears targeted at gaming. The construction of the X3MB is so outlandish I don't know what I am looking at. I had another thought, the "FX" designation on the Turtle Beach Cancun FX, is that an effects generator like an LAPC-1 or a Gravis Ultrasound card? That may make it the best MIDI device ever used for gaming.

K, The X3MB is supposed to have a USB for modern computers and alternately a MIDI in for use with an MPU-401. The stereo line out is RCA that does not connect to the line in on a soundcard easily. That space shuttle must be an alternate form that can still be ordered. Apparently you can still order new X2GS. There's some variability in exactly what you order.

The Turtle Beach Cancun FX is waveblaster daughterboard. For some reason this thread made me realize what it's full name is implying.

That dbx format soundbank is not supported by Awave Studio.

X3M is a MPU401 external midi device, a USB midi device and a USB audio device 3in1 product. It is a very versatile piece of hardware.
