Lesser known Win9x MIDI Softsynths

Postby Stretch » 2019-1-06 @ 21:05

I found a list of some MIDI softsynths archived from a Japanese website at Sound Cards Heaven - Soft synth MIDI many of which I had never heard of before. If you browse the website in the Google Chrome web browser, it can translate the page so you can navigate easier.

You can't download any software, but you can listen to sample playback of the source MIDI sp33xg.mid from the free Yamaha MIDI Song Library. You need this software to play the music Yamaha SoundVQ

Softsynths in this list that I was unaware of, which I would like to find out more about:
Altec Lansing WaveCUBE
Brooktree WaveStream
Faith WebSynth
InVision CyberSound
FPD98 (this one has a free lite version available but I couldn't get it to run in Windows 98)

P.S., there is also a FAQ on that website 8 Mb tone file bug (?) (Sound Blaster AWE series in general) which states that the 8MBGMSFX.SF2 soundfont has an incorrect drum setting. Can someone with soundfont knowledge confirm?

I found a sample of Faith WebSynth on youtube with the title MIDI - Faith Multi Player FX-77. I think that software came bundled with some computers in Japan in the late 90s - early 2000s.

e.g. https://www.inversenet.co.jp/pclist/product/SHARP/PC%252DDJ70V.html

Also came as WebSynth D77 with some Onkyo soundcards and audio interfaces (boxes have WebSynth logo, lack Windows XP logo).

Attached are the following WebSynth D-77 items:

- Windowns 95/98 version
- Windows 2000 version
- Windows ME version
- Instrument map (English)
- installation manual (Japanese).

I haven't tried to install them myself yet, and the zips were made on a modern Mac, so please mention it if something doesn't work.

Thanks. I tried the win9x release on some typical game MIDIs, and I think it compares favorably to Roland VSC3.

Not very well known that works with Win98 (manual says so):

Terratec Komplexer
https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.soundo ... -vst%3famp

It's a virtual analogue/wavetable synthesiser based on a Waldorf MicroQ. Works as a standalone or VST soft synthesiser.
