It is very difficult to damage a silicon chip with heat from an ordinary soldering iron.
On the other hand, ESD is a much more serious issue.
Always put into a socket what you consider valuable - if there is enough space for a socket, of course.

All (I hope) components are ordered and somewhere on earth heading in my direction! I look forward to building it (hopefully without breaking anything/setting something on fire)!

Good luck! It was a pain to assemble. Do keep the KiCad file open to search for capacitor and resistor positions!

Lovely ... now that's a re-issue that truely deserves the label 'replica', while making sure it can't be abused to fraud people into thinking it's a vintage card.
Very well done.

Can't get KiCad to work on my Linux Mint, must look into that. I did use Gerbv to print some of the layers for annotations.

I will assemble the MUS1099 first. If that's a disaster I'll just sell the whole thing as a kit (no I won't ;)).

The MUS1099 is pretty easy apart from the pot. And of course check the tantalum polarity!

You do have my bracket, right?

Yeah, the Snark Barker is a buttload of components... do keep the Kicad file open for component placement, and import the BOM into a spreadsheet to check of the placed items!

Also double check the orientation of the 89s51! It’s the only IC facing to the right! I placed it to the left. Got really hot, but survived.

You guys are scaring me :D It will probably take me a year to finish mine.

Did you get the brackets 3D printed?

The bracket is a standard blank one. Holes will need to be drilled/punched/sawn. Which is okay for the round holes, but the joystick/midi and the volume knob ones are going to be fun. My workplace (a hospital) has a lot of equipment and people around, I am looking for someone to help me cut the holes.

Mine is done, minus the DB15 connector, which I forgot to order, is in the mail. It works, and I am working on the video. Might split it in two. Raw material is more than 30 minutes, including soldering montages.

For the bracket: friend of mine has a DB9 stencil. We might try using it twice to make it as wide as the DB15 connector. the volume knob will be... tough. Maybe leave it out? I hardly tune the volume anyway, since my capture devices or listening devices have amps and volume controls.

PS: did anyone already receive their PCB from me? I shipped all, except the one for Vetz, who wants it shipped somewhere else. But so far I have no feedback on receiving of any PCB.

Well, I would expect that Russia takes some time. With customs etc.

What a cool project. I don't need one, but I kinda want to build one. :-)

Hm, 30 minutes is a bit steep. Wouldn't mind myself, but I'm building one myself and eager to learn from your mistakes. ;)

Nonsense. Any reasonable fellow is spending that much time on the can anyway. Queue 'er up and pass the time well.
