@grommit2007

You sent me a PM regarding Audigy 4 & SB X-Fi Elite Pro drivers.. but I can't reply back coz of this forum's re+arded rules.
Yes, I got the Discs for both cards.. but am unable to post them on vogons drivers, because more re+arded rules and because nobody answered my messages (*ahem*.. SqallStrife)

You ain't been around these parts very long have you?

The rules are there for a reason.

being able to receive a PM but not reply is, in fact, retarded

It would not be that bad if the PM sender was notified of the fact the recipient will not be able to answer or, even better, if the recipient was allowed to send PMs but only to someone who had PMed him previously .

I don't know if either of these scenarios could be put in place (assuming there are no bad side effects to consider).

Probably already discussed topic but i could not find answer it - I have a nice CT3900 card w 32mb memory and my ultimate goal would be to use it with yamaha wavetable board. So i could have 4 in 1 soundcard- FM synthesis, AWE32 ROM onboard sound samples, Soundfonts in RAM and Yamaha XG rom sound. Problem is i cant get RAM wavetable sound at dos games . Is it even possible to use this card that way?

Am I correct in assuming that you want to load soundfonts into the card's RAM and use them for General MIDI music in pure DOS?

If so, this can be done, but there are two major restrictions. First, it will only work for older, real-mode DOS games such as X-Wing and Space Quest V. It won't work for newer protected-mode games such as Doom and Duke Nukem 3D. Second, you can only use the older soundfont type in .SBK format under pure DOS, and there aren't many good ones out there.

Under Windows9x, the situation is much better. You can use newer .SF2 type soundfonts and pretty much every game will work fine as long as you run it from within the Win9x DOS prompt.

Thats correct.
When yamaha daughterboard is on place, it works, (yamaha sound, not AWE soundfonts). Without DB no General MIDI sound at all, output is silent.
Windows apps sound great, but no sound at DOS prompt.

For a pure DOS session (which means either DOS 6.22 or "Start > Shutdown > Restart in MS-DOS mode" under Win9x) you need to run AWEUTIL.EXE /EM:GM in order to load a soundfont into memory.

As mentioned before, this only forks for .SBK files and will load SYNTHGM.SBK by default. If you want to use a different soundfont, you need to rename it to SYNTHGM.SBK and overwrite the existing copy. The only decent sounding .SBK soundfont that I know of is FineGM.

On paper there are quite impressive specs on AWE 32 but in reality, well, quite lot hof hassle with this card imho. I discovered, when larger soundfont is loaded, windows boot-up time takes about 30 sec longer. Just tested Audigy on same computer (Pentium III) and it really impressed me with its sound quality and soundfonts work flawlessly! I am thinking to drop AWE32 from this machine (altough its visually so cool behemoth card 😀 ) and maybe i use some simpler card for ymf262 FM synth. Or am i gonna lose something else if i ditch AWE?

There are a couple of games that have special sound enhancements which are custom tailored to AWE cards. See here: AWEstruck...

Other than that, not really. Many other cards can provide equivalent SB16 compatibility and genuine OPL3. And as you have seen for yourself, SBLive / Audigy cards are better soundfont loaders.
