History of the SAA1099

Postby root42 » 2019-3-14 @ 10:00

I know that the Philips SAA1099 was used in a number of machines: the SAM Coupe, some ZX Speccy expansions, some SGI machines, and of course the Creative CMS and early SoundBlaster cards.
The ICs I got the other day have NXP branding. However Philips didn't spin off NXP until 2006, so I wonder: how long was this IC actually in production?

I am also curious. The NXP ones look so... modern.

Being a ZX enthusiast ... was it ever used during the mainstream lifespan? Always thought it was a modern development.

EDIT: A decent starting point would be to check the dates/revisions for the datasheets found on the net, some semiconductor producers actually list the point of time when a chip was discontinued (ST does that I think)

I have no idea. Just searching for the history of the IC I found a bunch of videos about speccy expansions. So could be a recent development.
