First post, by toastdieb
Hello all,
Let me start by saying I've been something of a lurker here for quite a while, and I hate that my first post is asking for help for what I'm sure is a really basic and stupid problem to have.
So I recently picked up an old Pentium III machine - a TriStar Starstation, which as far as I've been able to figure is an old CAD machine built entirely out of off-the-shelf parts. I was hoping this would mean it would be fairly easy to get up and going, and in most respects it has been, but I still haven't been able to get sound working. The motherboard is a Tyan S1846SLA Tsunami ATX, with onboard Ensoniq ES1373 sound. It detects and the original driver disc will install the correct driver, but I couldn't get it to actually output any sound so I just assumed something is wrong there, uninstalled the drivers and set the jumper to disable the onboard chip, then installed an allegedly good Soundblaster Live 5.1 (model SB0060). I've tried multiple known-good PCI slots and Win98 just will not detect that the card is there, so I can't install the drivers. I don't have any other machines readily available that have PCI slots to test it in, unfortunately. Is there something I can do to fix the problem or at least verify whether or not the card is a dud?
