Some progress, FX1 hardware is ready (still working on the firmware)
soundcard with usb audio streaming and effects processing possibility.
It will be perfect for usage in MP-32 and other projects too

maybe i should make a separate thread for FX1

I'm keen to know more about it, it's the first time I've seen it mentioned. I assume it's a soundcard / midi player for the pi?

it is a soundcard + midi interface for the pi (and any other platform that supports usb audio class and midi class... ))

Hi, I just stumbled upon this page after looking at various other suggestions for MunT emulation on laptops, spare pcs etc.
I have used Dosbox successfully with MT32, but having just taken ownership of a P2 win98se real PC, I was looking for suggestions that are more compact for use with the retro PC running real DOS. This looks great, and I would also.lkke to.sign up.for a unit as and when reordering happens. Is there a mail notification I can subscribe to for alerts on this project, or is it just a case of visiting this website/board every now and then?
Re the display orientation,I also think that on the side and not the top is nicer as I would have the unit on the shelf next to the monitor, but I will take whatever is available!
Many thanks for starting this project, it is exactly what us 'real hardware' DOS users need!

Hi,
here are some photos of a project I've been working on for a while : MP-32 = MIDI PI 32
It still needs more work, but since a few months it is on hold. I started to reconsider the idea.
So I thought today, I just show it as it is, and hear your feedback : Maybe it will give some inspiration
for when i pick it up again :

Generally this project is :
- PI3+ connected to a PCB with buttons + LCD, support for encoder dial (not in enclosure yet), for running synth emulators (MUNT, fluidsynth,...),
- an plug on USB sound card (new design, not yet ready, dream based) with an excellent CODEC, as audio+midi interface, also allowing line in mixing and effects
- headphone output with headphone amp
- a nice enclosure

Connectors on the rear :

main PCB:
- 3.5mm line in
- 3.5mm line out
- 3.5mm headphone out (digital volume control through menu)
- MIDI IN DIN connector
- optional MIDI THRU (not yet)
sound card :
- USB device for the soundcard (not yet) -> will need small cable to pi USB host... (i don't like that)
pi :
- USB host connections
- ethernet

Connectors on the side :

pi :
- HDMI
- 5V power (micro USB)
- original pi audio out (not used normally)

Connectors on the front :

pi :
- micro SD card slot for soundbanks, settings, software,...

MP32_top.jpg

MP32_rear.jpg

MP32_internals.jpg

That's it for now..

Also refactoring the pcb for this, to avoid the need for additional FX1 board
but adding button and pot pcb instead, for 'rack mount' design instead of top operated.

Looks fantastic. Will the display provide all the info the full sized MT32 does ? Channels, text info for Sierra online games etc?

The design is better than I hoped for at this time.
Great work to all involved.

Giddy to have this as an affordable option to a 'real' MT32. Even though dosbox offers MUNT, I would like to have this sat next to my PII and CRT and get a mostly real world setup when I use emulation via a laptop. The comedy messages that appear when playing Sierra games don't exist on screen with MUNT so silly as it is, I want one if these mostly for aesthetics.
