I have this card and am running Dos 6.22 only. I read that this card can support general midi by itself but that it is hit and miss in pure dos when run by itself. Does this compatibility change when hooked to an external midi machine such as SC-55? Or should I look for another card for external midi?

Yes, when connecting to an external MIDI machine (SC-55) - the AWE64 just does passes through the MIDI commands and it works fine.
