Any chance of adding a Crystal 4236b or 4237b? I’m partial to Crystal FM, although the ESS does sound awfully good too.

I don't have any Crystal cards myself, but other people who do are free to post their samples here.

Great topic!
Is there possible make sounds from Yamaha OPL3 YMF262 chip and Yamaha OPL3 YMF289 chip?
This chips are common but kinda rare, there is very uncommon chip from yamaha own soundcard with OPL4 YMF278 chip that would be cool to hear in comparison.

I do have some recordings of the YMF-262 chip as well.

As for the YMF-289, from what I understand, the YMF724 card has a version of that chip integrated inside its core, so these recordings should work fine for comparison purposes. Someone correct me if I'm wrong here.

Here is my records, first on the audiotrack is sb16 ct2890 opl3 ymf-262 and then sb16 ct2940 opl3 ymf-289b.
You can hear the bass whooming from ct2890 i don't know what to do for that, i quess its just a card feature.
I didn't hear big difference between cards so its just the sound is more brighter on ct2940. Do you?

pc specs
asus sp97-v
pentium mmx 233mhz

good aux cable and audacity record software
recording card sound blaster audigy fx sb1570, it is kinda good card for this.

I can get around to this sometime next week if you want to add it to your thread. I can also do it for AD1816 if you also want Analog Devices FM.

Would you be kind enough to share the .MID files for the following:

Doom E1M1
Duke3D intro
Tyrian level 1
Transport Tycoon main menu

The mids likely won't do good as you'll miss out on the game-specific timbres and audio engines to make the comparisons relevant.

I doubt they exist for Doom and Duke3D.. The latter two, I do not know. I have Doom, Duke3D and Transport Tycoon so I can record from in game with those, but Tyrian I do not have. I guess I can find a warez copy from the usual places..

I never used external midi files. All my recordings were made in-game for the reason that @leileilol mentioned.

As she said, I'm reasonably sure that at least Duke3D has some extra stuff going on. Heck, even playing the test tune from the setup menu sounds different from what you get when running the actual game.

Tyrian has been made freeware by the original developers. You can download a free copy from GOG as well.

I can do this for CX4236, AD1816 and OPTi 82C391 if you are interested.

Sounds good.

If you host the recordings on your SoundCloud account, I will add the relevant links to the initial post in this thread.

I have a recording of the OPL3 (CT1747) from the AWE32 over SPDIF. Its from level 14 in Decscent (Europa Co2 Mine). It was recorded ingame. I think the FM Version sounds great, although the MIDI version does too!

How close to CQM or ESFM / OPL3 are the integrated soundblaster pro solution modes on some motherboards from around y2000?
Like QDI Kinetiz 7E? (AC97 codec?)

can anyone provide recordings of Doom1 and Duke 3d midi here, if he can record it?

VIA's southbridges up to VT8231 sound pretty accurate to my ears.

ESFM is a beautiful superset of OPL3.
You may want to include Warcraft 2 into the list. It supports both OPL3 "standard" setup and also specialized ESFM setup. You may even compare ESS card with both setups to identify differences. 😉

Already did that in this thread.

I wasn't particularly impressed with how WarCraft 2 sounded on native ESFM, at least the main menu music. But other games like Heroes of Might and Magic 2 and Theme Hospital can utilize that functionality very nicely.

PC Sound Legacy just published an extensive FM synth comparison between various sound cards in this video.

Well worth listening to if you're curious about the differences.
