Hello all:

Need to the world of MIDI so pardon for the dumb question. I have a rig with a CT4750 for which I have it hooked up in Windows 98 via the joystick port to the SC-55 mk ii via MIDI. When I set the output in Win 98 it works great, and the built-in-test also works. However, I cannot get any DOS games to send the Sc-55 a MIDI signal. I've tried that same machine but booted into DOS (and not Win 98 DOS mode but real DOS on a dual boot). The CT4750 works properly in DOS alone, but the games(test games- SC2000, TIE Fighter, A-Train) do not send the signal to the SC-55 even when I set Roland or General MIDI mode.

I also tried on another PC with real DOS in which I have a YMF744. I have set this to work in DOS using the HIMMEX memory manager and the DSDMA legacy sound utility. Again, works fine on its own, but won't play nice with the SC-55.

Do I need another cable or kind of sound card? Would it make any difference if I got a joystick-to-serial cable? I really don't want to shell out for a hardware MPU-401 or another kind of MIDI cable that hasn't been made in 25 years and for which I'll have to wait two months to be shipped from around the world on eBay, but I fear I may have no choice.

SoftMPU is for other modules. I don't think it's relevant here. https://bjt42.github.io/softmpu/

In a perfect world I'd say replace that sound card, as it's one of the worst options for DOS. If PCI is your only option, something based on the ESS Solo-1 or YMF744 would be superior. But with that said, I think MIDI should be working on it.

- Have you installed both the DOS & Windows driver packages? I believe this card needs separate initialisation in pure DOS.
- What does your SET BLASTER look like, and do your game settings match it?

Have a browse of this thread. It starts off just being about bad FM (this much is known) but later gets into MIDI, different motherboard quirks etc:

Sound Blaster CT4750 sounds like garbage in DOS games...

As I mentioned the YMF744 isn't working either.

I did initialize the CT separately in pure DOS. I'll check the SET BLASTER.

Ah, sorry for missing that detail. Two machines, two cards... most unusual.

Well, fundamentally the issue is that I have no idea what I'm doing ... but I did get it working in Win 98, I'm not totally out to lunch (I hope).

well CT4750 is PCI, so good luck with dos for that. sounds like its not initialized properly for midi on irq 9 + port 330

Well as I mentioned it does work in DOS and I'm having the problem with other cards also.

What other cards do you have problems with? The CT4750 and other Ensoniq PCI based cards doesn't output MIDI through the game port in DOS. Same applies to the Live! and Audigy series of cards.
