Followed Phil’s instructions and if I boot direct to command prompt I can get music when selecting AWE32. If I boot into Windows 98 and then choose “Reboot into MSDos mode” the game will hang at “music init”. If I go into setup.exe the AWE32 can’t be detected but I can select “General MIDI” and the test says I should be hearing music but it’s silent. I’ve used the diagnose tool to verify my sound card settings. Any ideas?

Does the AWE64 gets initialized with CTCM then AWEUTIL in MS-DOS mode?

Also "General MIDI" will not work in DOS since that's for MPU-401 compatible devices and it is only emulated on the AWE EMU8K chip in Windows and with AWEUTIL loaded as TSR. The latter however won't work with protected mode games. You should select the "native" AWE32 driver for the music there in real DOS.

The AWE64 is also MPU-401 compatible but only through a gameport to MIDI cable.

This was it, I restarted into MS-DOS mode and reran my autoexec.bat, now I have music in this mode! Why does MS-DOS mode not run autoexec automatically?

Because it is executed already prior staring Windows 98.

For "Restart in MS-DOS Mode" there is a batch file called DOSSTART.BAT in C:\WINDOWS for that purpose, you can add CTCM and AWEUTIL there.

Got it, and thanks!
