I've been testing an ES688 sound card in my Celeron 1300 PLE133T system and it behaves oddly.. The OPL3 works fine, but whenever I try to use the SB functionality, the system crashes. ESSCFG always reports IRQ conflicts and IRQs not being available (even when other software like MSD report 5/7 free) . It might be a South Bridge compatibility problem but I'm kind of thinking it's a speed sensitivity issue. Does anyone know whether this card is speed sensitive?

Replacing it with an ES1898 fixed the issues so yeah either it is speed sensitive or has IRQ issues when used in high FSB speeds or maybe even ISA latency prblems in later Pentium III motherboards.

Interesting question. I've had a 688 crash in the same way, but only in socket 7 systems (166mhz & 200mhz). With that said, the card had a very hot and visibly browned ESS chip, so I think it had other issues!

It had previously served me well in a 386 though. Apart from never managing to get the MPU TSR to activate.
