Now if only I can get WSS to work in KQ6... Heck, I bet KQ6 won't work with a real WSS.

King's Quest VI works fine with an OPTi 82C930 in WSS mode.

Try setting WSS IRQ to 7 and WSS DMA to 1. You may need to reassign some Sound Blaster resources on the CMI8330 for that to work, since those cannot be shared on that chip.

PC#1: Pentium MMX 166 / Soyo SY-5BT / S3 Trio64V+ / Voodoo1 / YMF719 / AWE64 Gold / SC-155
PC#2: AthlonXP 2100+ / ECS K7VTA3 / Voodoo3 / Audigy2 / Vortex2
PC#3: Athlon64 3400+ / Asus K8V-MX / 5900XT / Audigy2
PC#4: i5-3570K / MSI Z77A-G43 / GTX 970 / X-Fi

Thanks, will give that a shot (will take time to report back, got to switch motherboards -- long story).

Thanks for the kind comments!

I have PicoGUS, MK8330+PCMIDI+McCake. And I approve 😀

Absolutely aggree!
With that combination you always have the best sound option a game offers.
Some games sound better with GUS, some with General Midi, some with MT32.
It's also a personal flavour thing. You can vary so much.
Not at last because you can load soundfonts with McCake and that gives you also a different sound.
I love that combi! 😀

I'm using nearly the same setup:
GUS PnP, MK8330 + McCake attached to WT header of MK8330.
I wonder what for you are needing the pc midi addon?

@Marmes
Great work from you and Keropi on the MK8330! I love it 😀

You can't use the McCake with MT-32 games that need intelligent move without the PC MIDI addon (or SoftMPU).

Ah, I see.
Thanks for the info, appiah4.
I have not yet tested a MT32 game which needs intelligent mode.
I think I will go the software route with SoftMPU then.

So I took my PC Chips M571 motherboard out of storage to test its integrated CMI8330 once again. I encountered a minor issue with the drivers, and decided to document it here, since it might also affect the MK8330. By default, the DOS drivers mute digital CD audio input (SPDIF). There doesn't seem to be any way to change that from the graphical portion of CMMIX.COM.

However, as PARUS discovered here you can type in CMMIX /DIG:M at the command prompt to unmute this input. Once that is done, it seems to persist even after a reboot/shutdown. I'm not sure if the volume of that input can be adjusted, but simply unmuting it was enough to make digital CD audio work, at least in my case.

I've tested this with Tomb Raider and Quake, and it worked great, with both games properly playing their respective CD audio tracks. However, attempting to play a standard music CD using the supplied CDPLYR.EXE utility didn't produce any sound for some reason.

My MK8330 was shipped mid Dec 2023 to me. It took 2 weeks from Greece to Brazil... and 2 months within the efficient public mail service.
After 2.5 months my MK8330 it finally arrived, and most important, intact!

I just plugged on my Slot 1 test bench (where the Orpheus 2LT was), modified autoexec.bat to run Unisound - and it works on first run, together with the X2GS wavetable. Very happy!

Quick question: on the Orpheus 2LT I am able to have midi out on 330 and the X2GS on 300: I could choose from the game setup which midi device without having to touch the computer.
With the MK8330 and Unisound, is there an option to have both at the same time? Or are we limited because there is just one device to manage midi? If that is possible, how do I setup Unisound?

Kind regards,

wow
at least it arrived safely, so it's something!
on the stock MK8330 there is only one mpu device: the CMI8330 one
on the LT you can have a dual-mpu setup because there are 2 devices: CS4237 + PCMIDI
the only way to have this on the MK8330 is by having the extra pcmidi addon board installed

Thanks! That’s what I thought, just wanted to be sure.

I really liked the black board. I know green is the retro way, but the black ones are really cool and slick! Tonight I will play with it a little bit more. Yesterday was just a quick run to chec.

Really glad I got this o e. Very happy owner of the LT and MK8330. Looking forward for you next cool gadget 😎

Hi,
I have issues with my MK8330 under Windows. The sound shutters a lot in QII and sound effects keep repeating in Windows in SB16 mode.
I tested with another Win9X installation, the same things happen.
It has the latest drivers (got on PCmidi website).
The problem isn't there with an Audician32 in the same machine.
The system is :
K6-III 400MHz (4x100, stock FSB)
Epox EP-MVP3C2
128 mb of SD-RAM
ATi Mach64 PCI
PowerVR PCX2

What happens if you set WSS as the preferred device for audio playback instead of SB16?

I encountered a similar issue with Quake 2 on my integrated CMI8330 (not an MK8330, just the same chip) but not as severe as what's shown in your video. For me, setting the Quake 2 sound options to "max compatibility" solved the problem.

[...]

you are having resource conflict(s) - at least from what is shown on the video
this is why the volume ding sample keeps looping
also why is your SB16 address set to 240 ? what exists in 220 and windows allocates 240 to the card?
if you resolve the resource conflicts sound will be good again

It seems you were both right.
- I resolved the conflict, thanks for pointing that. I didn't know that a resource conflict could happen without a notification in the device manager. It resolved the sound looping under Windows but not the issue in QII (whether I used SB16 or WSS).
- I don't have the "max compatibility" setting in QII, it's a demo version. So I did what Leileilol suggests here and it did the trick.
Still, that's more bypassing the issue than resolving it and I tested only an handful of games in Windows for now, suggesting that the issue would eventually manifest itself again.

It seems to be quite common with QII on a CMI8330, I hope that little troubleshooting to be helpful to someone in the future. I'll keep the video online with a proper description for that reason.
I'd be curious to see if someone can tell that he played Quake 2 without any issue with that chip. It probably occurs in specific contexts.

Thank you for your help and please let me know if you have any suggestion to resolve the issue.
