I have an ISA SB16 Vibra CT2260. It has a 262 OPL3 chip. The sound output is very hissy and lacking any kind of bass. The reason I noticed this is because I have a PCI Yamaha XG card with an OPL3 chip on it (YMF724) and doing an A/B comparison the ymf724 sounds loads better:

CT2260 OPL3-262 https://voca.ro/1aMutU6Qk2Ix
YMF724 OPL3 https://voca.ro/15LYSyXkhKC5

Is it just the circuity of the chip that's making it the way it is?

I suggest you search for CT2260 on Vogons. You should find links to some sample recordings which you can compare to your card's output to get an idea of what might be normal for it .

Someone else had this exact card and also mentions the noise issue (though hissing/ringing was present as well): http://dosdays.co.uk/topics/sb16.php
Note: there are two variants of the CT2260: one with Line Out, one without.

Re: SB32 - CT3600 vs CT3930

https://vccollection.ru/?p=5049 (Russian page; CT2260 recordings are listed as Vibra 16 - but the FM is relatively clean there)

Not really related to the issue, but found this: http://insight.actapricot.org/insight/common/ … in/soundbla.htm - May archive that section someday; a bit of a relic of info.

Also, Vibra cards don't seem to have much bass anyway. Something I don't mind myself, seeing the recordings on the Russian webpage.

Site update: cwcyrix.duckdns.org -> cwcyrix.nsupdate.info due to the former no longer working.

Thanks for the links! The one with the jumpers is very useful because I have been wondering what they do for a long time. Though the audio files in the russian link dont sound like mine at all. His E1M1 doom sounds like some fm synth version while my CT2260 sounds like every other opl3 version of doom. I'm going to read up on the vogons links to see what can be done.
As for the dosdays page, his description sounds on par for what i'm experiencing.
