Is there a way to directly connect my old Windows 98 laptop to a modern PC and use it as a MIDI playback device?

I make the MIDI composition on my PC, and the only way to hear how it sounds on the "real" hardware is to render it, copy it to USB stick, copy it from USB stick to laptop, play. It doesn't sound like a chore but after like 10 times it starts to get very annoying, and I'm worried about wearing out the laptop's single USB 1.1 port.

The reason why I have to constantly swap the USB stick is the painfully mediocre ESS Maestro 2E soundchip, which seems to be missing some instruments, while others sound like donkey's bottom. There are however some good sounds coming from it, and I want to find out what this chip can really do.

You can use MIDI-OX to route MIDI input of the computer into whatever MIDI output devices are on that computer.

Neither machine has MIDI ports, can this be done via USB or something else?

USB MIDI dongle with drivers for the OS you use is certainly an option. I don't know any hardware that can work though, perhaps someone can chime in on this regard.

That part of the story is easily solved by using a short male-female USB extension cable, fitted kinda permanently to the laptop.

I actually completely forgot those exist. Damn.

if your in windows you might find use of the roland serial midi device.
http://static.roland.com/support_archive/en/S … _readme_en.html

if your in dos you can use softmpu to output over serial. I use it to connect to a mt32pi.
But here another option from serdashop

Ive also tried to use the exp pcmcia card with midi support. But when i used it with doom it was missing commands.

another option is if you can get the docking station with the gameport with mpu401.

but key to connecting to a modern pc is the roland usb midi device

One other thing i noticed on my maestro 2 is that i at least saw on my gateway solo was a syth device that has a 4 mb ram option. I dont know why but it default to 2 mb. I think the 4mb might sound better, but i didnt have a lot of time with it.

Thanks, will check this out. Also, how can you see this synth device info? Is there a specific control panel? I don't think the drivers I have for this toshiba came with one.

i do this all the time (albeit in reverse) and have a pentium p54c laptop (nec versa p) permanently connected to an athlon xp pc (iwill kk226plus). what model is your old laptop? what is your modern pc? these are not throwaway details. instead of guessing, i could tell you an exact method.
