I found that MU1000 apparently don't sounds like MU50 in some midi files. Specifically the Gunshot preset. In this midi that was made originally in S-YXG50, in MU50 sounds exactly the same, but in MU1000 the Gunshot preset is a dissapoint for me.

I attached audio files, and i attached the midi file to compare it yourselves. But now i have a doubt, this sound difference is only in the models after MU100, or also is in MU80 and MU90?

MU100 and later have two sets of samples. On MU1000, go to Settings Menu and change "MU100 Native" to "MU Basic" to use the old MU80 set.

Modules: CM-64, CM-500, SC-55MkII, SC-88 Pro, SY22, TG100, MU2000EX, PLG100-SG, PLG150-DR, PLG150-AN, SG01k, NS5R, GZ-50M, SN-U110-07, SN-U110-10, Pocket Studio 5, DreamBlaster S2, X2, McFly, E-Wave, QWave, CrystalBlaster C2, Yucatan FX, BeepBlaster

My unit is set to MU Basic mode. Nonetheless, that don't answer to my question. The thing that i really want to know, is, if in MU80 and MU90, that effect used on Gunshot preset sounds like in MU50 or in MU1000.

The reason why i ask this question, is because the MU50 is part of the MU80 lineup, MU50 is the low range model and MU90 is the update of the high range model (MU80), while MU1000 is part of the MU100 lineup. As MU50 is part of the MU80 lineup, that makes me think that effect used in that midi file sounds like in MU50 on MU80/90.

If is the opposite (i mean, still sounds like in MU1000 in MU80/90), so, is something peculiar thing of the high range models. That means, that the XG midi files made on S-YXG50 only plays correctly on a MU50 as well as in a DB50XG and DB60XG (most of XG midi files since 1997 were made in S-YXG50).

And i'm not speaking about the waves used in the presets, i know that MU50 and MU80 uses different waves in some presets (To name a few; Calliope Lead, Bottle, Mod Alem, Voice Lead, Choir Pad, and the Room kick...), but i'm speaking about the effects. Did you listen the audio files?

Thanks anyway...

The XG system uses levels to segregate the different sound sets and features of the XG software and hardware synths. MU2000/1000/500/128 is the top, the middle is MU100/90/80, and the bottom is the MU50/15/10, the DB-50XG wavetable daughterboard, and the S-YXG100/50/20 softsynths. Common sound samples are shared between all three levels, but the highest level is where common samples have also been replaced with higher-fidelity ones, in some instances. The bottom level is intended for anyone who needs good MIDI for whatever purpose, while the middle and top levels are intended for music production.

That means that the midi file neither will sound how should sound in MU80/90?

Just tested this on both my MU80 and my MU100 and both of them sounds the same as the MU1000 recording in the OP.

Didn't realize the MU50 had a different soundset than the MU80/100 modules. I'll have to add one to my collection for comparison.

486 DX4-100 with 6 sound cards
486 DX-33 with 5 sound cards

Thanks! So, is a thing of the high range models. Why Yamaha decided to change the fidelity of the samples in the MU50? Or is a EQ thing? Anyway, the MU50 is very good.

could be a smaller rom size on the mu50. over on the roland side, models like the sc-7 are generally said to have more truncated samples compared to the sc-55.

also, while they released just a year apart, the architectures might still differ somewhat; spec-wise the mu80 is 32-part 64-voice with a variation effect slot, with additional slots for distortion and EQ, while the mu50 is 16-part 32-voice with just the variation effect slot. incidentally, i've wondered before whether that distortion effect slot on the mu80 is forward compatible with newer models, i.e. maps into one of the insertion effect slots on the mu90 without rewriting the MIDI...
