Lately I've gotten curious about the chips on sound cards, and I mean the actual chips themselves. I've tried looking for die shots, and while I have found a few, it's not easy. Either I don't know which chips in a long list got used on sound cards, or I do at least know of a few, but they're not on the list.

Here are the ones I've found so far:

https://siliconpr0n.org/archive/doku.php?id=v … r:creative-tech (basically the various 8051 microcontrollers used on Sound Blaster cards)
https://siliconpr0n.org/archive/doku.php?id=m … yamaha:ymf262-m
https://siliconpr0n.org/archive/doku.php?id=m … ster:intel:8253 (technically not used on a sound card, but still used to generate sound, given it drives the PC Speaker)

What else do you guys know of? Maybe we should compile a list?

Siliconpr0n seems to be the most comprehensive from what I've seen , they also have die shots of the emu8000 , sc55 and GF1.
Kinda wish they did a decap of the Ensoniq OTTO (ES5506) to see if the gravis is indeed based on that chip.

They do? I didn't even see Gravis or Roland listed in the vendors and Ensoniq's category was empty.

GF1 chip

Can't find the emu8000 tho I could have sworn they had it.

They don't have that ensoniq chip but I was saying I wish they did.

I supplied damaged SC55mk1, GF1, EMU8000 and couple others for decapping, I think the SC55 one is already helping things move forward with emulation of SC55 devices ~
EMU8000 is under cT1971

Ah wow so it was you , cheers for doing that , its nice to be able to able to see how the logic gates are all hewn together , not to mention it will help people with reverse engineering.

Hey, thanks for doing that! Much appreciated!

I don't suppose the card that donated the EMU8000 also included the ASP/CSP chip as well, did it? Die shots of that might be helpful for the project to reverse-engineer it or to fully emulate or clone the SB16 or AWE32.

I only sent in bare chips that had various faults, no ASP/CSP among them. I have actually never seen one such chip personally, none of the cards I have come across had it 🤣.
One chip that is missing is the sound chip found on DB50/60XG, it was sent among the others. Another chip seen on DB51XG is done though.
LA32 QFP apparently is exactly same as PGA version, same markings on the die too so it is now known that first and second generation MT32 have the same sound core. CPUs and their software are different though but these parts are documented and can be emulated perfectly already.
