I'm currently looking at upgrades for my CT4170 which is currently paired with a Soundcanvas SC-55 mkii.

Running Windows 98, and playing mostly mid-90s games (in DOS mode where I can always). If the game has Soundcanvas/General Midi music, of course I'll choose this option.

Will I notice a difference if I upgrade to say, an AWE64, for Sound Effects?
Would it be worth it for later 90s games or other games that do not make use of General Midi/Soundcanvas for music?

My mobo has open ISA and PCI slots
What cards would be recommended in this case?

I don't think an AWE64 is a reasonable update to an CT4170 if you are only using it for SFX. The samples are still 8-bit most of the time, so the better quality of the AWE64 won't help much.

The AWE could help for some very specific Windows games, that support it. For example, Dungeon Keeper or Croc.

It should also sound better for games using digital music, but in this case, I would also consider other cards if you are not interested in the EMU8000 synthesizer. If besides better digital playback you would like to add intelligent MIDI, then Orpheus II LT might be a good choice.
