Yamaha OPL3-SAx - Adlib not working?

Got myself a WinBook XL laptop with the OPL3-SAx chip on it. Sound works in Windows and I've got the DOS driver from here: OPL3-SAX in DOS
DOOM sound and music is working so I know the DOS driver works. No Adlib sound though. Tried in Keen 4 (which may not be configured right, don't know) and Planet-X3 which always seems to work out of the box but silence.
Does this chip not do Adlib or do I have something set up wrong?

I probably have too many old laptops.

It definitely has adlib/OPL2/3 support, but you may have to set the mixer up so that it actually is audible and if there's "Zoomed Video" option it needs to be disabled or OPL3 DAC is repurposed for the ZV feature and no sound will come out of it.

Here’s what the BIOS has for audio settings.
I don’t know much about audio setup on these so I’m not familiar with how to “set the mixer”. What do you mean there?
I don’t see anything about Zoomed Video in the BIOS either, but the bottom CardBus slot does support it according to the spec sheet.

Here’s the main BIOS setup menu. Display extending controls scaling automatically to 800x600.

I think the third option from the bottom is the thing Tiido is talking about... (Display Expansion Mode)

I could be wrong but thats sounds pretty similar to "Zoomed Video"

The mixer part is not what you do in BIOS but what you do from the DOS init program of the sound card or advanced settings in Volume control in Windows. You can use Yamaha's original SETUPSA program or my own SETYMF aswell as UNISOUND to initialize the YMF71x chip in the laptop.

That's what I was talking about when I said extending controls, that's to stretch the screen resolution. ZoomedVideo was a PCMCIA sub-standard for certain video devices like capture cards.

Here’s windows volume control. Did see a check box for ZV but it’s off.

I guess I could try the universal driver next.

You need to enable all the volume sliders too, many are hidden. Options > Properties > Playback and check all the boxes to reveal all the inputs, one of them is the FM level.

In Windows you should use Yamaha's own driver and not the WDM one built into windows, you won't get proper DOS support otherwise.

The only ones I have unchecked are the Mic in stuff. No FM level option. I'll go ahead and install the Yamaha driver though and see if that fixes things.

Adlib does appear to be setup by the DOS driver. Is the address wrong?

Ok, then the WDM driver must have connected FM to the MIDI slider in volume control.

The address certainly is correct. Now start SETUPSA directly without the /S parameter and set all the levels to your liking. There are sound tests for FM, SB and WSS to verify things are good.

Ok what on earth. I just ran Planet X3 in DOS mode (not launching through windows) and Ablib sound works.
What would I have to change to get it working when launching from Windows?
And also, what's up with those two errors?

Also just realized - sound effects aren't working in doom, only music.

IRQ or DMA etc. settings are not right, whatever they must be I don't know. Laptops can be special and need very particular configs. You can look at the resources in windows device manager and use the same ones. Alternatively you can use SETYMF or Unisound, SETYMF can be found here : Re: T-04YBSC-A, new YMF71x based sound card + SETYMF utility

You can still see the numbers you see in SETUPSA and match them up. Show a screenshot of what is in device manager.

Update: After messing with the settings for a bit, I've gotten all sound modes working under DOS, although they've been a bit glitchy.
I've run into all of the following with the working configuration:

- All works fine (DOOM music + SFX, Keen 4 Sound, Planet X3 Sound, XTC-PLAY mod player
- Adlib sound non working or very quiet
- DOOM sound effects not working or very glitchy

The biggest issue now though is that Windows no longer loads. It locks up at the point where the splash screen leaves, right before Windows's GUI takes over. It still loads in safe mode, so clearly something I did messed up some driver, but I have no idea how or why, as I was only ever changing a DOS sound driver.

Ok, Windows DOES actually load, but just now freezes and unfreezes several times during loading, so it appears that it's locking up.

Oh, and Windows sound no longer works 😠
