Hey Vogons, long time reader first time poster.

My main squeeze is 98SE on a p4p800 mobo w/ P4 2.6ghz with 512mb ram, a GeForce ti4200, and a YMF724F with midi out to a first gen MT-32.

If I boot straight to DOS and load the Yamaha tsr (setupds, ymfirq, dsdma), SoftMPU hangs on "SoftMPU active at port 330 irq 5".

However, if I boot to windows 98 and drop to DOS then load the tsr, softmpu starts without issue.

As far as I can tell, the everything is loaded the same, but when Windows is loaded first there's something using an extra 4k of conventional memory. Is there some other sound driver or memory handling going on?

The behavior is still very consistent.

Going to try some other sound cards I have and see if I can reproduce the issue with them as well.

Sounds strange cause when i restart in msdos it runs through the whole boot process. Check your clock battery? Windows can change pnp resources and maybe on a cold boot something isn’t set the same?
