Hi

Is anyone aware of any game that supported Roland sound canvas modules in an advanced way compared to general midi? I remember that various games offered to select Roland sound canvas as well as general midi (eg Doom(2))

Are there furthermore games that used the Roland general sound „standard“ meaning more than 128 instruments ?

If you want to hear Roland GS in all it's glory, you will need to look at Japanese computers. The Sharp X68000 in particular. You can emulate the system and use a real module.

As for games actually sold on normal PCs in the west, Brave Soul has a true GS MIDI set, but it requires an SC-88, not compatible with a 55.

Modules: CM-64, CM-500, SC-55MkII, SC-88 Pro, SY22, TG100, MU2000EX, PLG100-SG, PLG150-DR, PLG150-AN, SG01k, NS5R, GZ-50M, SN-U110-07, SN-U110-10, Pocket Studio 5, DreamBlaster S2, X2, McFly, E-Wave, QWave, CrystalBlaster C2, Yucatan FX, BeepBlaster

Duke3D uses GS drums (if available) during the intro song. It may possibly use GS instruments for certain in-game tracks as well, not really sure.

Stonekeep definitively uses GS instruments for its music, if the "Roland GS" option is selected in setup. Also, the early versions of Dune 2 can use GS for sound effects during the intro.

I have not yet technically confirmed this but when I was working on rendering the Wing Commander: Privateer (floppy release) General MIDI XMIs on a Roland SCC-1 card, "Refinery" (BASETUNE.GEN/10.XMI) seems to use the GS variation tone "Bubble" -> https://youtu.be/OzsHMybDAS0?si=pd4e2Zm9XRpuVXEo&t=2212

Microprose's Transport Tycoon (floppy release) has a music board option for "Roland Sound Canvas" but would need to extract the music data to check GS use as the game won't launch if SC selected.
