Some games have "high color" modes, like GTA 1 and Screamer 2. I am not talking about the 3dfx modes but specifically the ones with high colors.

Upon starting these with a Voodoo 3 in GTA I get a "No supported SuperVGA chip detected!".
On Screamer 2 I get a broken screen instead.

I also found an article from the German Magazine PCJoker about Pandemonium saying that you might get the error message "No supported SuperVGA chip detected!" on the game with TNT2, Voodoo 3
oder Voodoo Banshee and then you will just be out of luck and cant run the game.

Is there really no way to fix that?
1.
I tried to just run the latest UniVBE driver (SciTech UNIVBE 6.7 - DOS) which will also just generate the error

2.
I found UNIRFRSH and VBEHZ in this thread Windows 3.11 Drivers (Voodoo3 & #9)
I ran the setup, configured my monitor, started UNIRFRSH and then VBEHZ. The only difference is then that instad of the broken screen in Screamer 2 I get a black screen

3.
Over here I found VESAFX18: VESA Fix Utility Listing (for old video cards)
But using it also doesnt change anything.

So is there indeed no way to fix that? Any of you got one of the two games running in high color mode on a Voodoo 3?

That sounds like an UniVBE message. Go to: https://gona.mactar.hu/DOS_TESTS/

Search for Rob Muller and try the modified univbe.drv files.

Thanks you. I just tried it, but unfortunately it doesnt work.

GTA 1 does use the UNIVBE 5.3a and so I put in the right file in the folder. The game doesnt give the error anymore, but it still doesnt run. Previously it already booted in the game inconsistently on that mode, and showed a split screen. After putting the file in this happens consistently now.

Screamer 2 on the other hand, doesnt use univbe.

Have you tried running VESAFIX in conjunction with the modded drivers from Rob Muller?

BTW, the Voodoo3 doesn't support 15bpp video modes that some DOS games use. Not sure about Screamer 2 in software rendering though.

For Screamer 2 there is no univbe, so I dont think the modded driver thing applies there. vesafix -6 keeps the beautifully colored pic in my first post

For GTA 1 the combination of both actually fixes the issue!

The mode in screamer 2 is called "High Res 65k Colors". Would that be 15bpp? Or is that something completely different?
The Low Res 65k Colors option shows the game, but its only using the upper half of the screen.
High Res 256 colors works perfectly.

No, it is something completely different. 65K colors means 16bpp which is supported by the Voodoo3 while 15bpp means 32K colors.

Thanks, will check NOLFB!

Yeah, both titles are also supporting 3DFX, but I also want to try to compare, and would like the better software version being available. Because otherwise the 3dfx version is obviously better.
Especially with modern screens 3dfx often doesnt look too great and software can look better - if you have the cpu for the frame rate.
In that regard:
GTA with 3dfx on 133Mhz -> Too fast, needs to be fps locked in game
GTA with high colors in software on 600 Mhz -> hardly playable. (maybe 15-20 fps)

I was able to play Screamer 2 with my Voodoo 3 3000 without problems by following the instructions at: https://www.philscomputerlab.com/screamer-2--bleifuss.html

These are the instructions to play Screamer 2 on 3dfx. I am talking about the High Color mode here, which doesnt run on the V3.

Why would you want to do that? Screamer 2 on 3dfx actually has some weird artifacts on the road. These appear on the V2 as well (not a V3 issue). The Software High Color version possibly looks better.

I just tested screamer 2 with a voodoo 3 3000 AGP. It works flawless without any additional drivers, voodoo 3 is notorious for supporting vesa 3.0 in bios. I have bios version 2.15.07-SD (latest bios for my card), if this helps. You should probably try to update your bios, even if you have the same version, sometimes this cards have corrupted bioses for no reason.

You did test the high color software mode? I actually had to update/exchange my BIOS before already as V3 cards apparently often come with a flaw of pixel artifacts on 320x200.

I've tested START65H.EXE and START65L.EXE, both working fine in both DOS mode and Windows 98. I loaded only the cdrom drivers, no univbe or other vesa fixes.
I used the original cdrom version and 1.11 patch.
I also have artifacts in 3dfx mode.

I managed to get GTA working as well using vesafix 1.8. Without vesafix it will only work at 512x384 with a horizontal band flickering on top of the screen. With vesafix all modes are working without issues .

I have a problem with Voodoo 3 3000 and Fatal Racing, for some reason, a part of the image goes off the screen and the game looks greenish and dark.

On my other 1280x1024 5:4 monitor I was able to fix it using Vbehz but with this 1024x768 4:3 monitor I couldn't, after running Vbehz, the image looks too white and is still out of place.

I'm including an image of what the game should look like so you can see the difference.

Maybe I'm configuring the Vbehz wrong, to do the autoconfig, I used the values from: https://www.phc.sk/p/11103/compaq-1520-15-lcd-monitor

Are there tools to fix this issue or I can do something else with Vbehz?

Sorry for the late reply. That H one doesnt give me anything. GTA on the other hand I can get to run with the updated drivers in combination with the vesafix.
Possibly it's the version of Screamer though (I am using the german release). Will try to find the english one.

Are you using the normal version of fatal racing or an inofficial 3dfx patch? If you are using the latter, you can post a link on where to download the patch and I can test it (if it is compatible with the 2 german versions I got)

I do own the german copy (its called bleifuss 2 here) and I now downloaded an english version of the game to test. I actually just copied over the start files, and these seem to be language independent. The ones from the english version actually work (with the rest of the game still from the german install). So its possible that this already includes some updated baked in drivers? I can see a clear difference from the higher color mode in the better looking sky.
