So, I have a Compaq Presario 425 coming in the mail today. Awesome retro computer.

I only have one concern with this particular computer - it has a built-in CRT as you know. I tend to get neurotic about things, and this time it's CRTs and radiation.
This 425 does have a crack in the plastic frame [see the attached photo]. It's not a severe crack, and from what I can see it does not affect the CRT in any way, but is there and is noticeable.

Should I be at all concerned, or is it simply cosmetic (I'll take cosmetic issues over functionality any day!) and safe to use? It does appear to be just a typical plastic crack, but of course, I'm neurotic about it 😜
Thanks for any advice!

(The photos are just snippets of photos I got from the seller)

Ask yourself instead this, does plastic stop CRT radiation from "leaking" out?

answer: no it doesn't, it is purely cosmetic, as long as the tube itself isn't damaged you should be okay.

You know what, now that I think about it, if it stopped radiation there would be no vents on the monitor. *facepalm*

It suppose it to be fine. If the tube was damaged I don't think it would be looking as good as it does 😜

I think the same as you two. Back in the 2000s, when TFTs where in fashion, I thought the same about radiation.
It's better to be paranoid, than dead. 😉 Nah, just kidding, CRTs aren't that bad in that respect.
Also, colour CRTs or VGA monitor in general are less likely to radiate in a dangerous amount.
I think that was more of a thing during the monochrome era, but even then, it was a long-time issue.
If you had to sit more than 10 hours a day at your work place in front of a tiny CRT with all settings turned up.
The dangerous radiation lasts just a few centimetres in front of the CRT tube, I think, degrading many magnitudes
with each of them, just like normal radio waves would do.
That beeing said I still have a strange feeling in my stomach when I think about importing Japanese video game cartridges.
When I got a Japanese SNES with brittle plastic case, as I found out, I couldn't resist to ask the seller where he got it from.
He then told me that he got it from years ago (before that accident) and I felt better.
Anyway, that didn't stop me from building myself a Geiger counter with a Russian tube. 😁

Well, the 425 arrived and the screen is perfect. The crack was simply the plastic. Thanks for advice!

I remember people back in the 1920s buying wall socket covers/plastic plugs thinking it would stop electricity from leaking out. 🤣
