Hey community,
I bought a cheap CRT (that was working) and cleaned it with an all-purpose cleaner and a water hose (very low pressure). After I let a fan fry it for a day I reassembled it and now I have no picture other than "polar lights" anymore. My only theory was that all the dust I was washing off went on the board, so I cleaned it again, no change. There's also no way I moved the convergence rings.

What I noticed:

  • .)the heater is glowing orange-red
.)when I turn the CRT on I hear no sound in the beginning (I think you are supposed to hear degaussing or high voltage when you turn the monitor on)
.)I only hear high voltage when the monitor starts drawing the picture
.)the degaussing coil is very sticky (worn off rubber)
    .)no smoke, no fire

Does anyone know what the issue could be?

If I remember correctly, similar effect can be caused by magnet (but I am not 100% sure)...

I also think so, but the only magnet it ever came into touch with was my screwdriver. What sucks is that I can't degauss it, because I neither have a strong magnet, nor can I degauss it through the menue (because I can't read it, duh)

Older "trafo" solderers (gun-like ones) emmit strong enough magnetic field while turned on.

This is because there's moisture on the CRT socket on the neck board, you need to get the thing completely dry before things function right.

Thanks to both of you. I guess I'll take the board out and let it dry for another day before I try something else.
