I just bought some games from the "actua" series. But these seem to be newer/edited versions. They don't work with Win95/DX5 and the PCX1/2 What a shame.

Retro-Gamer 😀 ...on different machines

Ah, ok thx. I found other very interesting cards S3-Virge with PCX2 ....but I never found any prices...

He sells on Facebook so just PM him.

Most only have 5-10 cards made.

5-10 cards? ok we are talking 1000+ USD per card?

The V3+PCX2 was $450. Which I think is very cheap for what it is. I’m not sure if this is the same price for everyone as I purchased the v4 mini-me too.

The V3 section runs at 183MHz. So if you showed me a v3 3500 and pcx2, recapped, for less than 450 I’d be very impressed.

I bought 2 new old stock Compaq voodoo 3500 for 50 dollars, a MAT-M3D/N for 10-15 dollars. It's a very cool card though and very unique congrats. I guess it's fair if you want a card with a pcx2 and a voodoo3 on the same pcb since nothing like that exists contemporary. Thats assuming there's no bugs with the implementation and this design somehow is actually superior in some way performance wise.

Considering 3Dfx prices in the last few couple of years, as well as PCX2 and M3D cards that I've seen come and go for 100$+, I'd say that's actually a pretty good price for this card and the concept is great as well, really digging it. Love these community projects, we have so many choices these days.

I am curious on the technical side of the implementation of such combo card. I wonder if it uses transparent PCI bridge or standard PCI bridge to split the bus, as the later has a software impact that increments the bus enumeration on the new bus segment. Performance wise, both chips now reside on 1-hop bus segment if you use it on legacy PCI chipsets such as Intel 440BX or 2-hop bus segment on more recent chipsets that demote PCI to the south. A lot of Voodoo1/2 era games rely on low-latency, fast access to Voodoo framebuffer. As for the PCX2, if its peer-to-peer PCI bus mastering traffics would be confine within the PCI bridge on the combo card or it relies on upstream PCI bridge for peer-to-peer traffics. The later would further downgrade the performance of PCX2 rendering into Voodoo3 framebuffer.

I wonder if you would really put it into use on retro PC for games or just shelf it for a show. Otherwise, both chips are at least 20 years old of age and the semiconductor process at the time would at most spec'ed for 10 years of physical material degradation.

What I find interesting about this card is that the PCX2 can run at 80MHz. So in a lot of tests it is now a bit faster than a Voodoo 1!

The card uses a PI7C 8140 PCI bridge chip. Anthony has explained in more detail but I cannot find the details right now, I will try though.
