Yea the Voodoo2 beat the Gf4mx, but just barely 🤣 .
This system is interesting, on alot of levels, to get these cards to work properly I have the PCI-Latency set to 128, one of the only systems I've ever had to set it so high. At 32, they would post scores a quarter of this, and the Gf4 would stutter with 2d direct draw apps.

I know I got the results a while back, but got busy with other projects and forgot about them 😅 . This is also the last hurrah for my Pentium 4. I recently finalized a private deal and now own two Pentium 3 Asus boards (a Slot 1 and S370), two P3 CPUs, two Celerons, and a few other bits and pieces. I only have two ATX cases though, and one of the motherboards has to go in storage for the time being. But it won't be for long; as soon as I can find a suitable case for one of the Asus boards, the Pentium 4 will be reassembled back in working order.

Ooohh, the pain......

Voodoo II is capped with the p4.

I'm actually surprised the i740 with that much vram is so weak, its being fed by a decent enough cpu, yet its about the same speed as a voodoo II being under fed\limited on a pentium pro @ half the speed.
I always thought the AGP variants were so slow due to mostly lack of vram.

Same here... I'm going to try my second card with the latest 0147 BIOS and see what kind of results I get. I used the PIII to make sure I wasn't CPU-limited in these tests. Surprising to say the least.. I have the following others to try as well:

Intel i740 - Real3D Starfighter (SFA-100M-B) 4+4MB AGP (1998)
Intel i740 - Real3D Starfighter (SFP-100-A) 12MB PCI (1998)

But AGP cards don't have texture memory.

decided to run 3Dmark99 on my Pentium 133 machine.

Gateway socket 7 board (standard OEM Intel design) with the 430TX chipset.
Pentium 133Mhz
64Mb SDRAM
Sparkle branded S3 Virge DX 4MB
Diamond Monster 3dfx voodoo 4MB
Windows 95 with DX6

first off the S3 Virge
7fcbd829-6943-4d30-8312-398770f6fc42_zps4plrnh8s.png

most tests failed to display correctly whether its due to the 3D awesomeness of the Virge or drivers , Im not sure , one of the tests for instance looked like this

00ab4511-f386-4ce8-a7fa-36c86bfdd776_zpsqp1hgjpw.png

now for the Voodoo

6212464e-510b-4e7b-8c4a-5bc40eadb093_zps1m80xomf.png

all of the tests displayed correctly of course (not to mention that games like Tomb Raider or Mechwarrior's Glide versions run significantly faster than the S3 versions)

If you're using the MS DX6 drivers, try to lower test settings to 640x480 and double buffer; you'll get better visuals, but your score will drop like a rock.

Voodoo 1 score looks pretty close to mine 😀

Ive been thinking of upgrading this to a P166 non MMX, as long as games like DOTT and Monkey Island dont start acting up due to the increased speed.

and actually those are the settings I used, at the end of the day its not a big deal of course, the card does what it says on the tin , it plays 2D DOS games .

Although I have to say Im not a fan of it , the output (at least on this card) is blurry in comparison to the Matrox Mystique or even the ATI Rage and its not quite as fast as the Matrox either, along with some centring problems it has on my Apple Studio Display (shame on it for making this monitor look bad) only reason Im using it is for compatibility with Commander Keen particularly (could also use a Rendition based Diamond S220, but that comes with its own issues of course).

Give the CPU upgrade a test run, if DOTT and Monkey Island work as before then you're set.

Have to agree with the Virge video quality and speed at high resolutions, my Diamond Stealth 3D 2000 looks soft and faded above 640x480; granted, the Voodoo 1 does influence video quality as well, but even when I connect my Acer LED monitor directly to the Stealth 3D 2000 the output still looks somewhat "flat". The S3 Virge does appears to be good at just one thing: playing DOS games.

I also have been looking for a video card that's as good as the Virge in DOS and Matrox Millennium II in Windows, and probably may have found it. I've been trying out an Nvidia Riva TNT 16mb PCI card from Creative Labs on my P166MMX build for a few months now, and so far everything looks great - very good compatibility with DOS games and really good video quality and speed in Windows 95A. I still have some more tests to run, but if the TNT passes them with flying colors then it's very likely I'll keep it as my video card of choice.

Ive actually been tempted to just run Commander Keen (or any other incompatible game) on my Athlon 1400 machine, given that its not a speed sensitive game and only has basic Sound Blaster music (meaning it should be fine with the SB Audigy's DOS emulation) , and just use the Matrox card (Id have to imagine the fact its made by a brand like Sparkle doesnt help )In fact Ive thought of putting the Rendition card in that machine next to the V5500 and just using it for some DOS and rendition specific games, switching cards in the BIOS as necessary)
