After reading the thread about ridiculous hardware requirements I felt like building a period correct system for playing Doom 3 with hardware available at release.
Perhaps there are others with period correct hardware who wants to contribute results to a toplist? Who has the lo.. fastest period correct Doom 3 system?

When Doom 3 was released the best Intel CPUs were the Northwood, Prescott 5xx, Gallatin and the Dothan. The best AMD CPUs were different flavours of single core K8 (Athlon 64/Opteron).
When it comes to motherboards the latest chipsets for Intel CPUs were i875P, i865, i915 and i925X.
For AMD the latest chipsets at the Doom 3 release were the Nforce3 and the VIA K8T800 PRO.

Update: Note that the period correct hardware cut off has been changed to 2004-12-31 and even some later A64 steppings such as the San Diego are allowed in many cases as they perform the same as the Clawhammer core and many year 2004 A64 models were made using both core revisions. Read the clarification below.

When it comes to Video Cards, PCI-E was the new hot thing and the top cards were the ATI X800 XT PE and the Geforce 6800 Ultra. The ATI X850 series only adds PCI-E interface to the X800 series so we can include those aswell. SLI and Crossfire were not available to the wide public in August 2004 so no dual action in the period correct list. (late Nov for SLI, early 2005 for Crossfire if I remember correctly)

Of course all older hardware is also OK, so is new systems but the idea is to run somewhat period correct hardware. Too new systems will have their own separate toplists. 😈
If your system is overclocked then write something like this "P4 Northwood 2.8(200)@3200(228), DDR1@456(CL2,2,2,5)" and so on so people quickly can see why just your system perform so well.

Update: it seems the DEMO cant run the timedemo, Im trying to find a fix. The Doom 3 demo can be found here: http://www.fileplanet.com/145822/download/DOOM-3-Demo
Press "Ctrl + Alt + ~" to bring the console down
The command to run the timedemo is "timedemo demo1 1" The last 1 is to buffer the demo, otherwise a second run will always be faster.

Update: The Doom 3 DEMO will not run the timedemo and no fix exists, you need the real game.

Update: Doom 3 version 1.0 is faster than version 1.3 and 1.31. If a system looks a bit too slow in the list this could be the reason, many of my own scores were made using this slower version.
The performance difference varies depending on the system. Less when it comes to period correct systems, more with modern systems. Less with a GPU bottleneck, more with a CPU bottleneck.
If you own a physical copy of Doom 3, install from your discs and do not update to the latest version! If you already own the Steam version and can't find an original disc on Ebay be creative.

Sceeenshots showing results and computer spec posted in the thread is encouraged but not required. More details are better than less but when writing your spec for the entry it's good to look at the length of other entries and what information is included as I will butcher every entery so it "fits". If unsure what to inlcude just include everything and I will shorten it down. Be sure to include motherboard information!

Clarification and changes when it comes to period correct CPUs, chipsets and video cards. Discussion about the rules can be found in the thread.

Intel CPUs: If the CPU was released in 2004 or earlier.
Top CPUs: P4 570, P4 EE 3.4 and P4 EE 3.46. Dothan Pentium M 765.

Intel chipsets. All chipsets released 2004 and earlier. All versions of the i915 chipset are allowed as they are basicly the same thing just targeted at different brackets.
Top chipsets: i875P, i865, i915, i925X, i925XE.

AMD CPUs: ALL single core socket 754/939/940 (but not AM2) CPUs with a default speed of 2.6* GHz or less. (Even San Diego and Venice).
Top CPUs: A64 FX55, Opteron 152/252*, Opteron 250*. Opteron 152 and 252 entries will be called something like "Opteron 152 (FX55)" as they are allowed only because they are the same thing as a San Diego FX55.

AMD chipsets. All chipsets released 2004 and earlier. The nForce4 Pro/32 chipset is allowed even though it's technically a year 2005 chipset as the 18 extra PCI-E lanes bolted on using "CK8-04" isn't used when using a single video card.
Top AMD chipsets. Nvidia nForce3 and nForce4, VIA K8T800, K8T800 Pro and K8T890.

*If the system uses two CPUs then max 2.4 GHz which corresponds to the Opteron 250. A dual 2.6 GHz Opteron system was not available before the date Feb 14 2005.

Nvidia video cards. All Geforce 6 series cards or older.
ATI video cards. All Radeon X8x0 series cards or older.

Simulating a period correct CPU for the non overclocked period correct list using a non period correct CPU is okey as long as it's a perfect simulation like using a FX57 running at 13*200 and calling it a FX55. Using a Geforce 6800 GT clocked at the Geforce 6800 Ultra clocks and calling it a Geforce 6800 Ultra is also fine. Almost all of my own period correct entries, both AGP and PCI-E were made using Geforce 6800 GT video cards clocked at 400/1100.

Edit 2019-03-17

As we have an entry in the period correct list with an 6800 Ultra @425 MHz default GPU clock speed setting the GPU clock to 425 MHz on any 6800 card (use Rivatuner) is of course fine. Stock memory speed for a Geforce 6800 card is still regarded as 1100 MHz (or less) for now but might change in the future if someone posts a score with a card having faster stock memory clocks and I find it likely such a card could be bought in late 2004.

A system can only have a single placement in each list. Additional lower scores using different CPUs and video cards are welcome but will be marked with "X" in the list.
What identifies a unique system is the motherboard and only the motherboard.
If you get a better score with a system you have already posted the list will be updated with your new score and placement.
The overclocked and non overclocked lists are considered different lists, there is only a single "Anything goes toplist" as anything goes.

Settings 1024*768 with UItra Quality and sound enabled. This goes for all lists including the anything goes list.

Period Correct Toplist
- only Chipsets, GPUs and CPUs that were released before Dec 31 - 2004. No SLI in the period correct list but using two CPUs is allowed.
Changed the cut off date from Aug 3 to Dec 31 - 2004, it solves alot of issues.

Great, lets use the 1024*768 Ultra Quality settings for the list in case someone uses a CRT that cant handle greater resolution.

I have a i875p system that is period correct but I think I will build something with an i915 or i925X board and a PCI-E Geforce 6800GT.

edit fixed typo

This doesn't work for me 😢

Are you sure this works in the demo? Demos often do not have the timedemo demos included.

Following the instructions nothing happens and in the console is this error:

WARNING: Couldn't load gui: 'guis/map/loading.gui'
couldn't open demos/demo1.demo
Game Map shutdown

I will look into this later today when I have built my Doom 3 system.
If the timedemo is missing perhaps someone can upload it.

🤣 Have you actually tested this before starting this thread?

I have not even loaded up Doom 3 since I bought it a long time ago. I was a bit buisy with World of Warcraft at the time so I did not play through it.
But it seems a bit retarded to me if the demo do not include the timedemo as it is the best way for people to see if their hardware can run the game before buying it.

But its good to see the scores of some already finished systems so I know what to build 😉. Standard Def Steves Dothan is a killer, too bad I do not own a s479 board or an adapter.

Just know that you wasted a lot of my time mucking around with this 😠

If you start a thread inviting people to benchmark, linking a demo, then PLEASE test it beforehand.

You shoud try to see the positive side of things.
Now you have a perfect Doom 3 system, perhaps worth buying Doom 3.

But yea perhaps I was a bit too sure that it would work as I saw the demo link posted in another Doom3 timedemo thread posted on another forum.
I will try to see if I can get the timedemo running in the demo later today.

EDIT reading around a bit on the net I can at least see that you are not the only one with this problem.
In many threads some do not get it to run, I do not even know if its possible, perhaps all the others have the full version although the demo link is almost always included.
I will update the first post to reflect this until I find a fix.

I know the alpha had it...but I guess not the demo.

Doesn't everyone have the full game anyway?

Need to see if putting the timedemo in the demo works.

I am having a bad morning.

I found my Abit AA8 925X motherboard and a period correct Prescott 530 but when i removed the CPU already mounted in the board the CPU got pulled up with the mounting mechanism and then fell back down in the socket 😠 . The result was two damaged pins and of course the damn board would not post. Lucky enough i managed to get the pins a little less bent and now the board posts fine but my intention was to try diffrent Prescott 5xx until I found a nice one that could run at >4GHz at default voltage. Now I do not really know if I dare to switch CPU again.

This oughtta be fun, considering my main retrogaming build's based around top-of-the-line-for-2004 hardware, mostly by coincidence.

-Pentium 4 Extreme Edition 3.2 GHz (Gallatin core, let's see if that extra L3 cache pays off!)
-2 GB DDR-400, dual-channel
-GeForce 6800 Ultra AGP
-Auzentech X-Fi Prelude (relevant because Doom 3 uses OpenAL and EAX, so maybe the X-Fi hardware acceleration might offer a boost, and while the Prelude's NOT a period-appropriate variant, the X-Fi CA20K1 DSP itself most certainly is)

I've also got another box in storage that's not too far behind and could be representative of a high-end system just the year before. Needs better RAM, though.

-Athlon XP 3200+
-1 GB DDR-333, dual-channel (I tried overclocking it to DDR-400, but it just won't stay stable!)
-GeForce FX 5950 Ultra (Since it's Doom 3 and not Half-Life 2, it might not totally suck at this!)
-integrated NVIDIA SoundStorm chipset (Let's see if NVIDIA has a decent OpenAL implementation...)

Time for a little Gallant Gallatin vs. nVidiXPerience benchmark showdown!...once the latter has a hard drive to call its own again, anyway.

Will it matter all that much if I use the Steam release of Doom 3 for benchmarking?

I don't think so.

I hear that Steam doesn't work on old machines anymore. Anyone tried that / knows more?

Doom 3 isn't on GOG.com so I'm stuck.

Steam dropped Windows 2000 support awhile back.

I believe it may still work with the API wrappers but I just make sure that the games I buy from there I have cracks for.

So as long as you are running XP on your 2004 machine then you should be good. SP2 even came out in Aug 2004 which is when us 2000 holdouts finally felt like we could "upgrade" to XP.

As far as SSE2 I don't know if Steam requires that nowadays (I know it didn't before) if so then the Athlon XP has no support for that.
